The meeting went smoothly as we made plans to build defenses around the perimeter of the of the town. Surprisingly even Amias had decided to pause all attempts of scheming and assist in helping me to better protect myself until he himself would descend. I wasn't looking forward to that reunion in the flesh, but that was a problem for a later time.
"You need to concentrate harder if you wish to mutate the current form, last time with that pet of yours was a fluke now you need to master doing it with intention." Amias had now become like a parasite into my mind.
After the day of the meeting, I didn't even want to see him again, but whether I wanted to or not wasn't even a decision I could control. When we spoke again, he forced a part of his consciousness into my head so we would be connected now at all times. I tried to reject him, but the damage was already down. He claimed this was for my own "protection" when really it was just another chain to bind me to him since he had no real control over my physical body in his present state. I would find a way when the time was right to evict him and be done with him after the situation was under control. My thoughts were still my own and that was one thing he could never change. He lost his chance for any reconciliation the moment he betrayed me first.
Right now, Amias was teaching me how to mutate the plant life around the village to make live trees that would work as a wall for defense and offensive purposes. Any intruder who approached would be attacked or pushed back via spore projectiles or poison powder, along with their physical branches. Amias had been keeping an eye on things from above to make sure no surprise attacks occurred again though he still looked down on the situation as ants fighting amongst themselves.
"On to the next area Lune." She galloped towards the outskirts into the woods behind the town where I had originally ended up. The area was now known as sacred and only myself or those I gave permission were allowed to enter.
"When do you think you will be ready to forgive me and just comeback home?" He whispered into my head.
"Probably never or at least until I get tired of being here, but who knows I could always just move to another world instead too." I taunted.
"Just because I can't reach you right now doesn't mean I never will my love, you would do well to remember that."
His words left a sour taste in my mouth.
"Ugh just stop with the halfhearted threats and give me the update on their movements."
"It's not a threat, but a promise Evelyn."
I could feel his muted power swirl around my hair fluffing it about. The action made me freeze in place.
'Was he getting stronger already that now he could fabricate his consciousness here?'
Amias continued on with is intel ignoring my reaction and proceeded to try and dissuade me once again from interfering in the lives of the slum folk.
"Their army is already on alert patrolling the city, if you get caught there is no guarantee you will be able to save them all without clashing with the thing you want to avoid."
"That's fine I have our own fellowship of paladins who will assist me if things go wrong and I will get out just fine like I've said." During the strategy meetings I had come to learn that the community actually had warriors of its own sect that followed the same teachings except they were co-ed, and the men and women viewed one another as equals.
"And as I've said before I don't like that that you will be letting other men in your presence so it would be best if you kept them at a distance unless you wish to see lightning strike them down where they stand."
Bickering with him now was always so draining mentally so I didn't even bother to retort. I've learned now giving him any attention would only fuel his ego and possessiveness even more, so I went back to work on finishing the wall.
"Evelyn, I mean it don't test me."
"I heard now leave me alone so I can be in peace." He huffed but finally quieted down.
I was resting in my patch of grass where I once was found when Sarah approached me with a basket of fruit in tow. I pretended to stay sleeping as she reached my perch and then surprised her in jest.
"Rah!"
I grabbed her small frame into my arms tickling her as she dropped the fruit with it spilling out. She laughed and giggled along as we rocked back and forth. I could only picture how it would've been nice if I had a cute child like this and then my thoughts went to the helpless kids I saw back in the kingdom.
"What's wrong Evie?" Sarah looked up at me, cheeks still rosy from the laughter.
Evie was the nickname just between us I had let her use. We grew close since my time in the temple though we made sure to keep appropriate while doing our own duties. She was a lovable girl with olive skin and grassy green eyes just like her mother's. From her memories I already knew that her father had been taken by the kingdom and killed so I made sure to never bring it up. I'd only been in this world for a couple of weeks now, but Sarah was the closest human to me.
"Nothing's wrong I was just thinking of what we should eat next time we do our little picnics." She smiled brightly at that.
Sarah was not only now recently assigned to me as my servant but now she was officially titled as my apostle among the community. It was discovered she was able to absorb and use my power and her mother was able to absorb magic from the surrounding environment and do the same to an extent. With these new announcements the town felt safer in knowing when I was no longer here, they would still have the bloodline of the blessed to stay with them for generations.
Sarah and I chatted while we ate and practiced so more magic for her to master. I was confident in leaving things to her mother and her while I was away to complete my mission. The sun was beginning to set as we made our way back to the temple and Lune was eager to leave. I sent Sarah to get ready for bed while I changed my garments into stealthy armor. I discussed some last details with Sandra and then Lune grew into her bigger size as we trotted to meet up with the awaiting group of paladins at the entrance.
"Remember the children and families take priority, but your safety is just as important for this mission be sure to keep that in mind." I leveled my gaze and used my magic to bless them each with a bit of my protection. The spent magic was draining, but without faltering I shouted out
"Let's go!"
