Chapter 17

Jonathan freaked. "Is that a gun? Holy shit Addy that's your mother's gun!" he jumped off the bed and started pacing around my room.

"Do you want everyone to know?" I snapped. "Keep your voice down."

Jonathan stared at me wide-eyed. "How are you so calm about this? There is a gun in your room and you-"

I got up and grabbed his shoulders shaking him violently. "Would you please calm the hell down? No. I'm not freaking out because I handle things differently."

"So you're just going to pretend there's not a gun-"

"Stop." I had enough.

I went back to my bed and sit down, placing the case in my lap. I slowly took the gun out of the tray and held it. It was a silver and black pistol with an engraved butt. The barrel was silver with little gold designs on it. It had to be the fanciest pistol- or gun for the matter- that I've ever seen. As I examined it, Jonathan shook his head at me and sat as far from me as possible. I rolled my eyes at his worry and checked the magazine for how many bullets were in it.

Empty.

I put the magazine back in and aimed the gun at Jonathan for fun. He let out a small yell and fell of the foot of my bed. I started laughing so hard tears ran down my face.

"You think that shit was funny?" he got up pissed.

I rolled my eyes. "Calm down, Nate. It's empty. See?" I pointed away from him and pulled the trigger. Nothing but a click was heard.

Jonathan shook his head. "Have you ever even used a gun before?"

I nodded and explained that my grandfather used to teach me how to use and clean it when I turned fourteen. Jonathan's eyes couldn't grow any wider. I held out the butt of the gun to him.

"Want to hold it?" I asked.

He recoiled. "Hell no. I'll let you handle that."

"I kind of want to test it out outside right now." I said while examining the gun.

He let out a humorless laugh. "Are you crazy? Your dad hear a gunshot a hundred miles within this place and he'll send his men out. And I like my life."

"Oh come on, Nate. Relax. Besides, there's only one person I plan to use it on anyway." I aimed at the wall picturing Anne's face.

"You think taking someone's life is easy? Addy, you have to live with that decision for the rest of your life."

I nodded. "I know. But if you were in my position wouldn't you want her gone... forever?" I locked eyes with him.

Jonathan was silent for a long time. Then he nodded in agreement. "Have you spoken to her recently?" he asked as he moved so he could lay down on his back.

"No." The lie came out my mouth before I could register that I lied. Something in me just wanted to do this alone. I didn't want anyone to try and stop me.

"Do you think she's plotting something? We haven't heard anything since she took Luke." he looked at me.

I placed the gun on my bed and took out the tray from the case. Underneath were three small bullets. I examined each.

"It's Anne. She's always plotting something." I loaded the gun, made sure the safety was on, and put the gun away. I locked the case again and got up to put it at the back of my closet. Then I put the key in my bottom drawer.

"True."

Eventually he fell asleep on my bed. I stayed awake, my mind to full to stop thinking. I was so restless that I got up to go take a walk. Outside was cold. I stood on the balcony with the door closed watching as tiny snow flakes began to fall. Just to my right I saw someone sitting outside next to the pool bundled up in a coat and pajamas. I grabbed a blanket off the couch and wrapped it around me. I slipped my feet into someone's shoes near the door and went out to meet the person.

The brisk air hit me in the face like a slap. I wrapped the heavy blanket around me tighter as I made my way over to the person. I could tell who is was as soon as I sat down.

"You are a lunatic for being out here right now you know." I said as I made myself more comfortable. Well, as comfortable as I could in this cold.

Gina looked at me. Her nose was red and her cheeks and eyes were puffy as if she was crying. She let out a watery laugh. "I'm guessing Jonathan finally went to sleep huh?"

"How'd you know that?"

She shrugged. "I worked for Anne. What do you think?"

I nodded. Once you do something your whole life it's hard to stop.

"I just want it all to end." she commented softly. "I want to move on with my life and live like a normal teenager would. Go to crazy parties and get grounded. Go to one school and not to spy on other people."

She sniffed and I reached to rub her shoulder but stopped. I pulled my hand back and dwelled in the silence. I didn't know what to tell her.

"All my life," I started, "I've moved from place to place. Fought for no reason. Dated random guys. Gone to wild parties." I shook my head. "All of it seemed fun at the time but now that I think about it... I could've appreciated it more. The normalcy of it all. I never kept close friends because I didn't want to explain my lifestyle. I... " I wrapped the blanket tighter around me. "I probably wouldn't know normal if it slapped me in the face."

Gina nodded. "Sometimes our jobs would feel normal. Like when Anne would create our covers. At least we could pretend we were normal."

"What was your last cover before, you know, the bitchy cheerleader I met?" I smirked.

She gave me a small smile. "Well, Anne liked how I could go into bitch mode in any circumstance. For you I was that bitchy cheerleader. Before that when Caden had to date Kat, I was the bitchy younger sister."

"You must have been really good at your job."

She grinned this time. "The absolute best."

It was silent again for a longer period this time. Finally Gina turned and faced me completely.

"Can you promise me something?" she asked. Her lips looked slightly blue and she was shivering.

"What?" I asked.

She stood up and looked down at me with cold eyes.

"When you sneak out day after tomorrow to go see Anne, promise me that you will put a bullet right through her brain."

Then she left me to wonder how she knew that.
