Chapter 10
Five days ago, Kat's house exploded. We all moved into father's house temporary; he had arrived yesterday from a conference. The nine of us: Me, Caden, Kat, Gina, Brian, Hunter, Michael, Eva, and her boyfriend Luke. He came over as soon as he heard Eva was in danger. On top of that his eyes looked red, like he was crying, and kissed Eva as though they were apart for years rather than days.
It was a touching sight, really. Caden and I haven't really spent that much time together lately. Not that I minded honestly. I've had a lot on my mind. Anne was getting closer and closer to me and people I cared about. This time I was actually in front of the house while it had exploded, unlike my grandparents' home.
We debriefed dad about what had happened and he had said he would handle it. He put two men to go search around the house and report back. Everyone was still shaken up, especially Kat. People-mostly Gina- were trying to talk to her. No one was used to a near death experience. Couldn't blame them. It's not everyday you hear that your boss wanted to kill your friend even if you died too.
Sitting on the balcony that overlooked the backyard of the mansion, I sat and watched the water. Right behind the pool was a large private beach. The waves were splashing against the pretty white sand. The early afternoon sun was shining down and the water making it look extra inviting, despite the slightly cool breeze in the air. It made me feel relaxed, calm. Like everything was okay.
And that's what I wished. That everything was okay. That I could rewind time and warn my grandparents. That I could spend time with Serenity and we could go shopping and make fun of Chris in Victoria's Secret. That I could still go to school and hang out with them. That I could learn to be a good girlfriend to Caden without putting his life in danger. That we could all be safe and normal again...
Someone handed me a tissue for a tear I hadn't even known had escaped. I accepted it and wiped my eyes before looking up to the person. It was Luke. I smiled warmly at him and gestured for him to take the seat besides me. It was quiet and peaceful for a while; both of us were lost in our own thoughts.
"It's really unfortunate to meet you at such a bad time." he finally said.
"Tell me about it." I replied.
The sounds of the water took over for a while. Luke cleared his throat.
"Um, I've been meaning to talk to you actually." he started.
I turned to face him. "What's up?"
"I, uh, I've talked to Eva about you know, everything that's been going and I um, I... " he broke off nervously.
I smiled warmly at him. "Spit it out Luke."
"I wanted to say that I want to help. Eva told me that you have trust issues with strangers and I just want you to know that I will try my best to help you find this Anne woman. Even if I have to die trying. No one and I mean no one hurts Eva and Anne came this close. I can't... I don't think I could stand it if something happened to her." he looked away from me.
"If Eva trusts you then I trust you too. And don't worry. Anne isn't going to continue to get away with all of this." I faced the water again.
I had to strike Anne before she hit us again. I had a feeling that the next time she hit, she wasn't going to miss. And one of us would be dead.
Dad came home last tonight with the men he sent to search the house. They were coated in rubble and dust so Papà had to report the findings on his own while they cleaned up.
