Chapter 20
I slipped on my jacket which was definitely a little too big but I couldn't complain. Even though we were in a state of crisis, the men gave us a normal breakfast. Toast, waffles, fruit and milk. We were each given a bottle of water and another of orange juice. I sat next to Jonathan talking about anything to pass time until my plan could set in motion.
"So Gina was mean to you a lot?" he asked chewing his meal.
I nodded and took a sip of milk. "Yeah. She had that whole evil cheerleader thing going on."
"Cheerleaders are hot." he smirked.
I shoved him and rolled my eyes. He laughed. The room was buzzing with action. Everyone had something to do. Everyone hear were working for money to support families and lives. And Anne was trying to ruin it. I couldn't hate anyone or anything more than I hated her.
"Thinking about Anne?" Jonathan asked looking at my hands.
I looked down and saw that I had squeezed my toast into crumbs. I groaned and stood up to dust myself off. "Crap."
Jonathan helped me clean up. Then we sat back down and fell into silence. I guess now would be a good time than any to put my plan into action. I stood up again and pushed my hair out of my face. During my little battle with the two guys earlier, my messy bun came loose so now my hair was everywhere. I twisted it and pulled it to one side.
"I'm going to the bathroom real quick." I said and left before he could say anything.
I started walking over to the weapons towards the bathroom. Just before I reached there I saw my dad in a deep conversation with two of his guys in Italian. One was his right hand man, Antonio and the other was a guy named Rob. I ducked behind a container behind them and listened in.
"She was running everything by the looks of things." Antonio said strongly.
"I know," my father replied, "But how is she doing it? She has access to things that not many people know of."
"We already got men everywhere taking out her guys. What else do you want us to do?" Jack asked.
My father rubbed his chin. "I want Anne. Adelaide is her target for reasons beyond my knowledge and I won't have her hurting my family. She already hurt my daughters. She won't have the chance to do it again."
I swallowed hard. My father sounded so strong and confident. I peaked up and saw them beginning to walk away. Then I made my move.
I walked over to the exit and approached the guard. I smiled and said I dropped something outside and that I had my father's permission to get it. He took out his phone (like and knew he would) and starting getting in touch my father when I fell down and pretended to faint. He started freaking out and checked my pulse. Then he ran away to go get help. As soon as he left, I got up and left. Since I couldn't get the elevator without taking time to look for it I ran down the hall looking for a door.
I made a mental note of all the twists and turns I made so that I wouldn't get lost. I spotted an exit sign up ahead and ran towards it. When I opened the door the lights came on showing me a stairway. I ran up the stairs quickly and opened another door. I continued down another hallway and opened yet another door.
"This is like a freaking maze." I muttered to myself.
The door led to a room at the back of the house. It was like a little storage room. Boxes were neatly stacked against one wall and the air smelled like old antiques. I walked over to door and opened it. The hallway was empty so I turned a headed to the front. The gas was still lingering but the obviously didn't come all the way over here.
I made back to the kitchen before I saw anyone. Anne still had men in the house. I snuck into the kitchen and picked up a glass. Then I threw it down the same hallway I just came a hid before it made a loud crash. That got the attention of the guys and they headed toward the sound. I snuck into the family room and ran outside. I didn't see anyone. I turned to head toward the side of the house when someone grabbed my shoulder.
I swung blindly and connected with the person.
"Wait, Addy I'm trying to help you." a familiar voice said.
Luke was fending me off with one arm while he clutched his face with the other arm.
"Oh my gosh, Luke! What are you doing here?" I stopped hitting him and pulled him into a tight hug.
He let out a small laugh and ruffled my hair. Then he looked around and grabbed my shoulders.
"I broke out and stole one of her cars.Where is everyone else?" he asked.
I shook my head. "I left three with my dad but I'm looking for my sister and everyone else."
"Oh I know where Eva is. She's actually waiting in the car I stole." He pointed towards the gate where a black SUV waited. Even the windows were tinted so dark that I couldn't see who was inside.
"I have to go make sure she's okay." I said heading over there.
Luke nodded and pulled me along. We ducked and hid from Anne's men until we made it to the car.
Luke pulled me down behind a tall bush right next to the car. "Okay look. I'm going to get your dad and everyone else out now. I overhead Anne's plans and if you and Eva don't get out of here..."
He broke off and looked pained. I grabbed his shoulders roughly. "What is she going to do, Luke?"
He looked away towards the house but didn't answer me. I grabbed his face so he could look at me.
"What is she going to do?" I asked again.
He sighed. "She's got her men in there planting bombs. You have less than 30 minutes before this place blows. I need you to go with Eva. Please." He begged while pushing me in the car.
Inside was really dark. Someone made a sound.
"Eva?" I called softly.
The person started laughing and turned on the car lights.
It was Anne.
