Chapter 24

"Okay this is it." We stood in front of a large door. After I peeked inside I saw that it was an exit to something like a backroom of sorts. There was a desk, a chair, and nothing else. I looked back at Luke. "Are sure this leads to an exit?"

He nodded. "Positive."

I sighed and headed in first. I touched the wall and tapped lightly to hear when it turned hollow. When I hit my mark, I nodded to Luke and Serenity who came in and closed the door. Luke tapped rhythmically on the wall. It slowly squeaked open, showing us a long narrow staircase.

"Ugh, couldn't it be like an elevator or something?" Serenity groaned.

"There is an elevator. But it leads straight to my mother's office so unless you're looking for a long afternoon with torture and pain, I would advise this way." Luke started up the steps followed by Serenity and then me. The wall closed in behind us causing the stairway to become dark.

"I can't see anything!" Serenity complained.

"Just try your best right now. None of us have phones or anythi- oorf!" I collided into Serenity who had stopped moving. But of course I couldn't see her.

"Can you warn me next time you think about stopping out of nowhere?" I said annoyed.

"Sorry, I thought I heard something." she said.

"Almost there guys. Just a few more steps." Luke panted from above me.

We trudged up a few more steps and met a landing full of dirt. There was streams of light coming in through little holes of something.

"What is this?" Serenity asked him.

He placed Eva down on the ground gently and faced the little holes. "Its right outside, next to my mother's flower garden. No one knows about this place except for me and the girl who helped me make it." He began pushing towards the light.

"Why would you make this place? What is there to do in here anyway? When did you even do this?" Serenity asked as I rolled my eyes.

Luke looked at her. "I made it some years ago when my mother was home and I wanted to spend time alone without her finding me ... or my company." He waited for her to catch on. It took a minute.

"Ew." She exclaimed. "There's dirt everywhere. What happened to your bedroom? Or your living room? Anywhere but here."

Luke chuckled and shrugged. "She didn't mind at the time. Besides I made it all nice and cozy in here when we would come and ... well, you know."

I shook my head. "How?"

"I brought a blanket." He said.

"Oh my gosh!" Serenity crossed her arms in disgust while elbowing me in the small space.

"Wow." I said.

"There wasn't even this much dirt before. Okay I almost got it." He gave the area a stronger push and it came apart. Dirt fell into the hole blinding us for a while.

"That's gross." I coughed.

I opened my eyes and peeked out of the hole. I was met with sky and grass. I climbed out and laid on the cold grass taking in the scent of brisk fresh air. Serenity came out after me and began laughing a little.
