Chapter 27
Her eyes bore into mine as the bullet entered her leg. She didn't move for a second but then fell. I watched as she suddenly sat back up. She had an evil grin on her face and a gun in her hand. Somehow I knew that gun was definitely loaded this time.
"You going to shoot again Adelaide?" she asked me.
I couldn't respond nor could I move. I still had my gun trained on her. She smiled at me and aimed her gun to my heart. She played with the trigger as blood gushed out of her leg. I didn't say anything but put my finger the trigger harder.
"Go on. Pull it. Kill me." she said. She took the safety off on her gun.
I did nothing.
"Do it. Kill me or I'll kill you." she taunted.
I continued to stare at her.
"KILL ME!"
We pulled the trigger at the same time.
I jumped awake out of my sleep panting and took in my surroundings. I recognized it. I was home in my room. Anne never blew it up. She was probably just bluffing. I glanced at the time. The clock blinked 2:37 am. A whole day has passed. I wiped my sweaty forehead in my damp t-shirt... that I didn't remember putting on. I pulled the covers away and turned on my bedside lamp. I looked at my leg. Someone had rebandaged it.
I unwrapped the bandage and looked at the wound. It was clean and restitched it looked like. I wrapped it back and got up. It didn't hurt as bad anymore. I changed my shirt and sat down trying to remember what happened. Someone must have changed it after I fell asleep again. I've been sleeping on and off since I got home.
I took out my hair from it's ponytail and ran my fingers through it. There was a glass of orange juice on my dresser which I gulped down. I was finally at peace. I didn't have to worry about Anne or her hurting my family. I could finally live a normal life and be a normal girl. There was no way of getting out of the mafia but I didn't want to. It was cool being the heiress to such a lifestyle. But I think Eva would make a better leader. After all this mess with Anne she changed when I last saw her. She didn't seem as weak anymore.
There was a light knock at my door. I stopped playing with my hair. "Come in" I said lightly.
Jonathan peaked his head in before fully coming and closing the door behind him.
"Hey," he said.
I smiled and motioned for him to sit next to me. He obeyed and pulled me into a hug and held me. I breathed in his warm scent and wrapped my arms around his neck. He pulled me onto his lap and I laid my head on his chest. I began to trace his abs with my finger as I listened to his heartbeat.
"Was it a nightmare?" he asked softly. I nodded. "Wanna talk about it?" he asked.
I nodded. "You were right. I keep replaying me killing her. Sometimes it's different from what actually happened though. Like sometimes I might stab her in the heart or something really violent. I didn't think it would be this hard. I mean she deserved to die after everything she did."
"But do you think she deserved to die at your hands?" Jonathan asked.
"Yes." I said without hesitation. "I don't regret my decision."
"Then why are you having nightmares? You shouldn't be thinking this hard about it if you have no regrets right?"
"I just feel like I caught her while she was down." I replied.
Jonathan fixed himself so that he was stretched out on my bed. He pulled me to him so that I could lay on his chest. He wrapped his arm around my shoulder.
