Kissy missies. . .
I flop down on my bed face first, face hot and lips buzzing. I shrieked girlishly and thought back to tonight, a fun and extremely stressful experience. . .
"Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham. Thank you for inviting me for dinner!" I say enthusiastically, plastering my nicest smile on my face.
"Oh, thank you for coming dear, it's so nice to meet you, after all we've heard. . ." Matt's mom giggles as Matt gives her an extremely cute 'are you serious?!' look.
"Come on, Amabel, let's go upstairs." Matt says, taking my hand and causing my heart to pound. I laugh with Matt's mother and follow him up the carpeted stairs. He leads me into a small room with a twin sized bed, dresser, closet, and desk. Nearly everything is blue, and I take note of the farmiliar scent that fills my nostrils.
"It smells like you." I say subconsciously. Matt laughs and sits down on the corner of the bed, wrinkling the navy blue comforter. "It's my room."
"Really?" I ask, running my hand over books piled on the dresser.
"No, it's Annie's room." I give him a look as he laughs at me.
"Don't you give me that sass, mister. I will fight you."
"Oh yeah, I bet you will in that fancy dress." He stands up and puts his hands on my hips.
"You look beautiful, by the way." I feel the blush crawling up my cheeks and turn around in his hold.
"No, Matt, we are not doing this again!" I say teasingly, remembering our first date. He spins me back around.
"Beautiful. Gorgeous. Funny. Amazing."
"OH YEAH? WELL YOU'RE HOT!" I yell on accident, covering my mouth. Matt starts laughing like crazy. "My parents definitely heard that." He says between giggles, and I can't keep the smile off of my face. I push him back onto his bed as he continues to have a laugh attack and fall back on a blue beanbag I have found. I wait until he recovers, trying to keep my smile hidden the entire time, which only made Matt laugh more. He has a contagious laugh, all teeth and dimples and giggles. He finally finds his sanity and starts talking again.
"Sorry, by the way, about that thing on the phone today. . ." My heartbeat quickens at the mention of his confession. I pretend to be oblivious, responding with, "What thing?"
"You know Amabel, I know you do. I said the L- word, and that was way too fast. I don't know what I was thinking, I guess I just had a brainfart. I mean, not that I don't- I mean, I really, really, like you but. . ." He blabs on and on, and I stand up and walk over to him before he can get more flustered than he already is. I grab his hands, trying to calm him, and he relaxes in my grip.
"Hey, it's okay."
And that seems to be all the assurance he needs.Later that night, Matt eventually drives me home after a delicious dinner with his parents. He walks me to the door, and I can feel what will come next. I glance for one second into his dark eyes, and I'm gone. All first kisses are awkward, and I've kissed other guys, but this was different. It felt almost too perfect, and even as my heart surged with giddy happiness, a tiny portion of me questioned it. Could Matt be too good to be true?
All the same, I layed on my bed with happiness coursing through my veins. I could not have asked for a better date, his parents were incredibly nice, he kissed me, everything was right in the world. Then I heard footsteps downstairs and Lilia and Thomas's voices. I begin to run down to say bye to Lilia and hopefully tell her about my date, but I am stopped short when I hear their conversation. I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but. . .
"I had fun tonight."
"Yeah, me too. We should do stuff like this more often, you know, just you and me." This comes from Thomas, and I can tell what he means. Without Amabel.
"Yeah, that would be nice." I hear Lilia say, and then silence. I peek around the wall to see what's going on, and suddenly I want to be blind.
And then I am, as I crawl back up the stairs quietly, unexpected tears blur my vision. I shut my door quietly, and an indescribable sinking feeling fills my chest, pain suffocating me. Why? Why is this happening?
