“So it mostly references the Invisible man, the real one the book was written about but he’s actually a type of wisp, maybe that's what you're dealing with. Unless it's a banshee, but I doubt it, they usually end up homeschooled.”
Humming I nod, Kent's vast knowledge of the secret books in nightshades meeting chamber coming in handy, “you said you can see the air moving?” He asks me and I nod, shifting on the edge of my bed as he closes the book and sets it aside.
“Yes, it was the shape of a blob, but I could see it vibrate.” He nods while listening to me before he furrows his brows and asks me a question, “Does it glow at all?”
“No, there was nothing. It was completely see through but I could see the air in a shape, moving around. It squeaked when I, exploded….”
He huffs, lifting a hand to scratch the back of his head, “My best guess is it's a wisp…you know we actually got a freshie in, we don't get wisps a lot because they mostly stay in Scotland for school. But I heard her father had some business close to here this year and he brought her along.”
“You know of her?” I ask and he nods, nudging my shoulder lightly, “Yeah, she's an Appalachian wisp, but she was sent to Scotland for school during middle school. You know outside of your family there are a lot of other influential outcasts, mostly tech and stock families but a lot of the others that go here have family or their parents in real estate, some in agriculture.”
“I see,” I say, “so Nevermore is more for social standing and relation building for your futures…”
“Yeah, our parents kind of tell us who we need to associate with outside of species. It's normal,” he says while giving a shrug, passing by the conversation like it was common knowledge.
Thinking about it as I eye him I wonder before squashing my thoughts, he won't know since I'm adopted. One thing I shouldn't have to worry with is Kent being after the millennium old fortune my name holds behind it. In fact I believe no one knows about it existing.
“You didn't know?” He asks and I shake my head in response. He hums curiously, “that's surprising, I thought that's why the school roomed you and Wednesday in here.”
“What do you mean?” He pauses at my question, answering with a shrug and a short head shake, “Well that's why you're in this room with Enid, it was a request, everyone knows about it. She bragged for a week straight that you guys were gonna be rooming with her when you enrolled. Her parents set it up “ he finishes looking at me.
“I didn't know this….” I mutter looking away from him. He looks at me, pausing before grabbing my hand, pulling it up to his mouth to kiss my knuckles. “I don't think she was pretending to be your friend though.”
“You know what I think? It's actually really cool that my parents like you, I don't have to do any buttering up with anyone.”
My lips curl down in a frown at his words, confusion filling me as I leave Enid behind in my mind, “You have a tradition to butter people…I thought you didn't practice in cannibalism.”
He paused, head turning and looking at me dead straight in the eyes, “You've never heard of buttering up?” He asked me. I frown, reeling back slightly as I look at his eyes, mine flickering to look between his, “No, I don't eat butter…”
He stares at me for a moment before humming and giving a nod, “You have a free period right?”
My head tilts and I raise a brow, “What does my academics have to do with a dairy product?” I ask.
He takes a deep breath through his nostrils and nods again, standing as he grabs his phone and unlocks it. “Where are you going? I assumed we were spending the hour together,” I mumble the rest under my breath yet still loud enough for him to hear me.
