The morning sunlight spilled across the driveway, warm and soft, glinting off the car's windshield as Rose reluctantly slid into the passenger seat. Her arms were crossed tight over her chest, a scowl etched on her face that could've scared off anyone but him.
"You really have to drive me all the way there?" she muttered, eyes fixed stubbornly on the window.
Ren didn't answer right away. His hands tightened around the steering wheel, the tendons in his arms flexing slightly. "Your brother asked me to," he said finally, voice even. "I'm just following orders."
Her eyes narrowed. "Following orders? What are you now, my personal bodyguard?"
Ren gave her a sideways glance, his lips twitching. "I'm not here to be your bodyguard," he said, his tone clipped but calm. "I'm here because your brother didn't want you to go alone."
She sighed, exasperated. "You could've said no."
He smirked faintly. "Could've. Didn't."
She shot him a glare, but he didn't bite. The sunlight danced on his face as he turned onto the main road-quiet, focused, annoyingly composed.
"So, for today, I'll be your... temporary companion," Ren added after a pause, voice dry as sand. "Lucky you."
Rose scoffed. "Yeah, lucky me. I get to spend my precious Saturday with you."
Ren's lips curved into that almost-smile again. "You sound thrilled."
"I am thrilled," she fired back, then muttered under her breath, "Not."
The car fell into silence after that-not uncomfortable, but not peaceful either. It was charged, like static humming in the air between them.
When they reached the aquarium, the entrance was buzzing with families and couples. The air was filled with laughter, the scent of sea salt and popcorn drifting faintly around them. Rose stepped out first, brushing her hair back, pretending she didn't care that Ren was right behind her.
"You can walk ahead, you know," she said casually, eyes fixed on the entrance. "I don't need a babysitter."
"I'd rather not lose you in the crowd," Ren replied, holding the door open for her. "You seem... easily distracted."
Rose's jaw tightened. "I'm not a kid, Ren."
His lips curved again, just slightly. "You're also not impossible to lose."
She shot him a look, but he was already walking ahead, his posture relaxed, hands tucked into his pockets. She followed, muttering something about "annoying men" under her breath.
The first exhibit glowed in hues of blue and violet-a massive tank of jellyfish drifting like tiny ghosts in slow motion. Rose stopped, the quiet awe in her expression softening her entire face. Her fingers brushed the cool glass as her eyes followed their fluid dance, her reflection shimmering alongside them.
Ren paused behind her, his gaze lingering-not on the jellyfish, but on her.
The light refracted through the water, painting her skin in rippling shades of sapphire, her eyes glimmering as if she, too, were caught in the current. Something in his chest stirred-unfamiliar and silent.
Without thinking, he lifted his camera and snapped a photo.
The faint click broke the quiet. Rose turned her head back.
"Just taking photos of them," he lied, pointing at the little sea animals.
Rose didn't say anything and looked back at the tank.
"They're beautiful," she said softly, almost to herself.
"Yeah," Ren said, his voice low. "Kind of like... quiet, glowing chaos."
Rose turned sharply, eyebrows raised. "Did you just call jellyfish chaos?"
He smiled, though there was warmth in his tone. "Depends on your perspective. Chaos can be beautiful."
They wandered through the glowing halls of the aquarium, footsteps soft against the polished floors. The place was alive with soft light and the gentle pulse of water shifting behind glass. Schools of fish drifted in unison, the light catching in flashes of silver and gold.
Rose kept walking a little ahead, her gaze constantly drawn toward the tanks-the way the colors moved, the serene grace of it all. She would pause every now and then, eyes reflecting the slow dance of the sea creatures.
And every time she did-
Click.
Ren's camera lifted almost on instinct. One photo here, another there. Sometimes it was the curve of her smile when she saw a penguin waddle past the glass. Sometimes the way her hair caught the faint blue light.
He told himself it was just... a kind of habit, capturing what caught his eye.
But deep down, something in his chest disagreed.
He didn't even realize how many times he'd done it.
And she had no idea. Rose was too lost in her own quiet world, in the glimmering lights and the soothing hum of the ocean around them.
He didn't understand why his chest fluttered when she laughed under her breath without realizing, or why the sight of her reaching toward the glass made him want to capture every second before it vanished.
Ren wasn't supposed to feel anything. He kept reminding himself of that over and over, like a rule carved into his thoughts. His interest had always been Mira-beautiful, charming, radiant Mira. The kind of girl everyone noticed the moment she walked into a room. He'd liked her for years, maybe even loved her in the way that felt safe and familiar, like a dream he'd never dared to question.
But now, standing here, watching Rose's reflection shimmer through the rippling glow of water, that certainty began to slip through his fingers.
It didn't feel the same.
With Mira, everything had always been loud-bright smiles, teasing glances, easy laughter that demanded attention. She was sunlight; she made sense. But Rose... Rose was something else entirely. She was quiet, unpredictable, yet impossible to look away from. She wasn't the kind of person who tried to shine, but somehow, she did anyway.
He told himself he was just being observant, that he was only noticing the way the light caught her hair or how her voice softened when she talked about things she loved. But he didn't realize how his gaze lingered too long, how his pulse quickened for no reason, how every time she turned and caught him looking, he looked away too quickly-too guilty.
There was no logic to it. No explanation he could reason his way out of.
He'd never felt this with Mira.
Mira was the kind of affection he could name.
Rose was everything he couldn't.
She was chaos wrapped in warmth, sharp edges softened by quiet wonder. She challenged him, argued with him, and still, he found himself drawn closer every time. There was something about her that pulled at him-not just her words, but the silences between them.
He wanted to understand her-the way her mind worked, the reasons behind the fleeting smiles and the sudden quiet that seemed to hide entire worlds. He wanted to know what went on in her head when she stared out the window for too long, what thoughts danced behind her eyes when she laughed without meaning to.
He wanted to understand things that people didn't acknowledge about her.
It scared him how natural it felt.
Because Mira was supposed to be the one.
But lately, every time he thought about love... he found Rose instead.
