Rose spent the whole night tangled in her thoughts and all of them circled back to him.

“Should I meet him? Comfort him?” she whispered into the dimness of the night.

Then she let out a low, humorless laugh. “But it’s not like we’re friends… we hate each other, right?”

Her fingers tightened around the pillow she hugged close to her chest. The warmth of it was nothing compared to the ache spreading inside her. She didn’t want to admit it, but she couldn’t stand the thought of Ren being hurt… being alone.

She had seen that kind of loneliness before, she lived through it. And for some reason, she didn’t want him to go through it too.

It was strange. Oddly, painfully strange. The thought of his smile fading made something twist in her chest.

She groaned and flopped back on the bed. “I shouldn’t be worried about someone I hate,” she muttered, but even as she said it, she knew it was a lie. Hate wasn’t what she felt anymore not even close.

“Maybe I should talk to Mira,” she said, trying to distract herself. “But… it’s not like we’re that close.” The words tasted bitter inside her mouth.

She sat up abruptly. No — she wasn’t going to sleep with this storm inside her. She needed air. She needed silence.

Her bare feet touched the floor, cold as ice. She flinched but didn’t stop. The house was asleep; only the faint ticking of the clock followed her as she crossed the room. When she slid the balcony door open, a soft gust of midnight air brushed against her skin, raising goosebumps.

The quietness of the night was heavy and endless. She leaned against the railing, her fingers curling around the metal. The sky was moonless, the kind of dark that made everything blur together.

Then her eyes caught something a shadow moving near the gate.

Her heart skipped. She squinted, trying to make out who it was. The shape stood still, like it belonged to the night itself.

And then realization hit her.

Ren.

Her breath caught. What is he doing here? At midnight too.

She blinked, unsure if she was dreaming. But no he was really there, standing in front of her house like a ghost from her thoughts.

Rose frowned slightly and lifted her hand, motioning. She can't risk waking everyone up.

"What are you doing here?"

Her gestures were sharp. her brows furrowed in confusion.

Ren didn’t move. He just… stared up at her. Caught off guard. The night breeze ruffled his hair, but he didn’t even blink.

Rose sighed. Seriously?

She gestured again, slower this time, asking the same thing. He still didn’t react — just stood there, frozen like time itself stopped with her looking at him.

She bit her lip in frustration. She couldn’t shout her parents would wake up. Even a whisper from the balcony could echo in the silence.

So she made a quick decision.

“Fine,” she muttered under her breath, turning away from the railing. She grabbed the nearest jacket soft, oversized, still warm from her body and slipped it on. Her heart pounded faster with each passing second.

Sneaking through the quiet house felt like walking through a dream. Every sound felt too loud  the creak of the floorboard, the soft click of the door.
