MJ turned too. “You’re late, man. Mira just left.”
Ren appeared from the crowd, a bag slung over his shoulder, hair slightly messy like he’d been running or pacing or both.
But his face… his face was calm.
“Yeah,” MJ added, patting his shoulder sympathetically. “You missed her by minutes.”
“And what the hell took you so long?” Kavin asked, frowning like Ren had personally offended his schedule.
Ren simply rolled his shoulders once and said, “Good. Then my surprise isn’t ruined.”
He looked straight at Gorya first. Oh how he wanted to take a look at rose .
“I’m following my dream,” Ren said, lifting his passport and boarding pass like trophies.
Kavin and MJ whistled loudly, instantly pulling him into a rough, brotherly hug. Ren let them squeeze him.
“All Thanks to Gorya,” Ren added.
He stepped away from the two and walked toward Gorya. Then he leaned closer and gently patted Gorya’s head.
Gorya flushed in embarrassment, waving him off, mumbling something about “don’t treat me like a kid.”
But Rose…
Rose’s breath stopped.
She didn’t understand why her chest tightened, or why her fingers curled around the hem of her shirt. She didn’t know why seeing Ren’s face so close to Gorya’s made her stomach twist painfully.
She didn’t want to feel this.
But the jealousy hit her so sharply she almost stepped back.
What is this?
Why am I feeling this way?
Why does it hurt?
Something warm slipped from the corner of her eye.
A single tear.
Rose blinked fast, confused, lifting her shaky finger to touch the droplet. Her own reflection in the shine of that tiny tear made her heart jolt.
Why am I crying?
Her eyes were glassy now, blurring the airport lights. Panic bubbled up she never cried in front of people. Not strangers, not friends.
She turned sharply, slipping away from the group before anyone noticed.
Her footsteps were silent but rushed.
Her breaths uneven.
She pushed open the restroom door and stumbled inside, gripping the sink as the first quiet sob broke free.
She pressed her palm to her chest.
Why… why does this feel like something is breaking inside me?
Her reflection in the mirror looked lost small like a girl trying to understand a language she’d never learned.
Because she hadn’t.
She didn’t know what affection felt like when directed at her.
What it meant to want something.
Someone.
She didn’t recognize longing.
Or jealousy.
Or heartache.
She didn’t understand that this pain this tightening in her chest had a name.
All she knew was that when Ren smiled at someone else like that…
…it felt like something inside her was cracking open.
A soft, choked sound left her lips as she pressed her forehead against the mirror.
“Why am I like this?” she whispered to the empty room.
