The morning sunlight slipped through her curtains, far too bright for her liking. Rose groaned and buried her face deeper into the pillow, her mind still foggy with sleep.

She forced herself upright, hair a tangled mess, and blinked blearily at the clock.

10:47 a.m.

"Great," she muttered. "I've officially overslept my entire morning."

Dragging herself out of bed, she splashed cold water on her face, tied her hair into a messy ponytail, and threw on the first comfortable thing she could find an oversized hoodie and shorts. No need to impress anyone. It wasn't like anyone important was-

She froze halfway down the stairs.

Someone was sitting in the living room.

For a second, she thought she was dreaming. But no she'd know that face anywhere.

Carson.

He was lounging comfortably on the couch, a cup of tea in hand, eyes flicking over something on his phone as if he lived there. His hair was neat, his shirt crisp, that same annoyingly calm aura radiating off him.

Rose blinked once. Then again.

What the hell is he doing here?

Crossing her arms, she stepped down the last stair. "You've got to be kidding me."

Carson looked up, a brief flicker of surprise before he smiled politely. "Good morning, Miss Rose."

"Don't go all formal," she said dryly. "Just tell me why you're in my house."

He raised a brow, amusement tugging at his mouth. "I could ask the same thing. You look surprised, didn't your father mention I'd be visiting?"

"Mention? No. Because usually, strangers don't show up in our living room before noon."

He chuckled. "So you're assuming I broke in?"

"I'm not assuming," she said, tilting her head. "I'm checking. You seem the type."

Carson laughed softly, but she didn't smile. Her expression stayed flat, unimpressed.

Before she could press further, her father's voice came from the hallway.

"Ah, you're awake, Rose."

He entered, adjusting his glasses, completely missing the tension in the air. "I see you've already met Dr. Carson again."

Rose's brows furrowed. Again?

What did he mean again? Did her father know they'd met before, or had Carson told him?

Her father cleared his throat, smoothly changing the subject. "I called him this morning for a meeting about a medical project I'm sponsoring. He's one of the consultants."

Carson nodded slightly. "Your father asked me to drop by. I didn't expect to run into you again so soon."

"Lucky me," Rose muttered under her breath.

She sat beside her father, arms crossed, her glare shooting invisible sparks. Carson didn't flinch; he simply resumed discussing the project. She tried to follow the conversation, but her attention kept slipping. Some of it made sense most of it didn't.

Carson noticed the way she zoned out.

When the discussion finally wound down, he stood and stretched, calm and collected, his presence somehow amplifying her restlessness.

"Well, I should get going," he said lightly.

Rose stood automatically, tugging her sleeves over her hands. "I'll walk you out," she offered, though it sounded more like a duty than an offer.
