The Aira mansion shimmered under layers of warm, golden light. Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceilings, scattering reflections across polished marble floors, while delicate string lights draped along the balconies gave the entire place a soft, glowing elegance. The steady hum of conversation filled the air, blending with the occasional clink of champagne flutes and quiet laughter. Guests moved in small, refined circles. politicians' sons, heirs to massive business empires, and Kocher High's most privileged students each dressed in expensive fabrics that seemed almost expected in a place like this.
At the base of the grand staircase, Ren stood stiffly, adjusting the cuff of his tailored blue suit for what felt like the hundredth time. The fabric fit him perfectly, every line sharp and intentional, but he still felt uncomfortable in it. He had been dressed and ready since early morning, forced into hours of greeting people he barely recognized, offering polite smiles and memorized responses. His social battery had drained long ago, yet the night was still far from over.
Despite the crowd, his attention kept drifting. His eyes moved, almost unconsciously, toward the entrance every few seconds. He told himself it was nothing. Just habit. Just boredom.
But even he did not believe that.
Beside him, MJ leaned casually against the railing, watching him with an amused expression that only grew more obvious by the second. Finally, he nudged Ren with his elbow, a grin spreading across his face.
"Waiting for someone special?" he asked, his tone deliberately teasing.
Ren shot him an annoyed look and shoved him lightly. "Shut up."
MJ only laughed under his breath, clearly unconvinced.
Then it happened.
A subtle shift moved through the crowd near the entrance. It was not loud or dramatic, but noticeable enough to draw attention. Conversations paused for just a fraction of a second, heads turning instinctively.
Ren's gaze followed.
And then he saw her.
For a moment, everything else seemed to blur into the background.
She stepped into the mansion with a quiet kind of confidence that did not demand attention, yet effortlessly captured it. The navy blue dress she wore flowed smoothly around her, the color deep and rich like midnight against the warm golden lights of the hall. It was simple in design, but that simplicity only made it more striking. Her hair fell naturally over her shoulders in soft waves, moving slightly with each step she took. The sound of her heels against the marble floor was steady and composed, matching the calm assurance in her posture.
MJ let out a low whistle. "Damn," he muttered. "Ray's sister really knows how to make an entrance."
Ren did not respond.
He could not.
His thoughts had stalled, replaced by one single, overwhelming realization.
I was right. You look good in anything.
He barely noticed the way his fingers stilled at his cuffs or how his breathing had subtly changed. All he knew was that he could not look away.
Then Ray appeared beside her, completely at ease, scanning the room until he spotted their group. A grin spread across his face, and without hesitation, he guided her toward them.
Ren straightened immediately, his entire body tensing. Suddenly, he became hyperaware of everything his posture, the position of his hands, the way his shoulders felt too stiff, the way his heartbeat seemed louder than the surrounding music.
