Ren’s steps faltered, like his body was arguing with his feet. The damp night air wrapped around them, the wind tugging at his shirt as if urging him to speak before the words fell out in pieces.
He blinked too slowly, eyes glazed, the streetlight catching in them like smudged stars. “I…” he began, voice thick and uneven, like words had to swim through something heavy to reach his lips.
Rose watched him. A chill wind brushed past, ruffling her hair and stinging her cheeks. Ren swayed slightly, like a tree with too much rain in its roots.
“I… I need… to apolo-gize.”
Rose raised her eyebrows. “To whom now?”
He slurred, head tilting as if gravity had its own secret agenda. “To you,” he managed, voice wobbling.
Rose frowned, uncertain for a moment, then stepped a half pace closer despite the cold. “For what…?” she began gently.
He raised a hand, fingers spread as if catching invisible motes in the wind. “For… leaving without explaining. For… coming back like nothing… happened.”
His cheeks warmed, a flush blossoming under the harsh streetlight. The wind gusted again, sweeping away a strand of hair at his temple.
His posture sagged, shoulders loose, like he’d been carrying too much weight for too long and now it was spilling out in trembling words.
“For… for leaving without telling you,” he repeated more slowly. His gaze darted everywhere except her face, like her eyes were a lighthouse he wasn’t sure he deserved to see.
“I always think… think I’m protecting… people by keeping quiet. But… but I just make it heavier.”
The wind brushed his cheek again, cool and gentle, and for a moment it felt like it was trying to sweep the tension out of him.
Rose didn’t reply at first. She watched his chest rise and fall unevenly.
It made something thrum in her own chest, a soft, unpredictable beat.
Rose finally spoke, but her voice was so quiet it almost blended into the night, like she was afraid a louder sound might scare the moment away.
“…You know,” she said softly,
“you’re terrible at apologies.”
Ren didn’t respond. He just blinked at her, slow and unfocused, like he was processing the sentence one syllable at a time.
The wind slipped between them, cool against Rose’s knuckles. She exhaled and continued.
“I won’t accept this kind of apology,”
she said, a little firmer now. “After what you did.” She crossed her arms, shoulders lifting defensively, lips pushed into a pout she pretended was annoyance but felt a lot like hurt.
Ren tilted his head, brows knitting together. “I… did?” he murmured, genuinely confused, like the memory was just out of reach.
“Yes. That.” She gestured vaguely at him, at the silence, at the returning like time hadn’t cracked anything open.
“I deserve a better one.”
She paused, eyes flicking to his unsteady stance — the way his weight leaned too much into one foot, the way his lashes trembled when he blinked. The frustration softened, melting into something reluctant and fond.
“But,” she added under her breath, “since you’re clearly not in your senses…”
She stepped closer before she could overthink it and flicked his forehead lightly with two fingers.
