My phone's obnoxious ring tone woke me up in the morning. I rolled over and lazily threw my hand towards the phone, desperately trying to deny the call. When the sound finally turned off I rolled back over and tried to go back to sleep.
I was just about to drift off again when I heard the same tone ringing through my room. I groaned before grabbing my phone and pressing it to my ear. I didn't even bother to see who it was calling.
"Hello?" I groaned. I don't know if you can tell but I'm really not a morning person... at all.
"Elyse? Oh good you're awake." I heard my mom's voice screech through the speaker. I sat up quickly and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, trying to prepare myself for the rest of the conversation.
"Oh, hi mom. How are you?" I asked halfheartedly.
"I'm great sweetie. I just wanted to call and see how everything was going up there. You haven't called in a while so we were getting worried." She rambled on in a cheery tone.
"Yeah mom, I'm fine up here. Nothing really to report. I miss you guys too." I say as I kick my feet over the side of my bed and stand up. Might as well get ready for school if I'm already up.
"Oh I almost forgot why I called, I have the funniest story to tell you. You know that little boy you used to go to church with.. you know the one that had the weird hair. Well I ran into him at the store the other day and we got to talking, did you know he's a lawyer now. Anyway.." She went on to tell probably the longest story I've ever heard in my life, I zoned out halfway through.
Now I know what some of you are thinking, but no. I don't hate my mom at all, she can just be a little bit annoying. Especially in the morning.
"That's so cool mom, I'm glad he's doing well." I was trying my hardest not to mess up my eyeliner as she practically yelled through the phone. This is how most of our phone calls went, her going on and on about whatever is new in her life while I barely talked. it didn't seem to bother her though, she's always been a talker and she'll talk to anyone who will listen.
I was busy looking through my closet when I heard a door open.
"Mom, why did you go outside?' I asked, assuming the sound was coming through her end of the phone.
"What, I'm still in bed sweetie." she replied before diving right back into the story she was telling earlier. I poked my head out of the closet and saw Calum standing awkwardly by the door. I smiled when his eyes met mine and walked over to give him a hug.
I almost forgot I was still on a call with my mom until I heard her voice ring through the speakers again. I accidentally rolled my eyes making Calum give me a questioning look. I simply mouthed mom and he nodded, I've told him stories about her before so he understood.
Calum laughed quietly before mouthing 'speaker' to me. I smiled and set my phone down on my dresser before pressing the speaker button.
"and so I told her that I was willing to help her but we would have to do it at my house because we didn't have a car at the time. I though I was being awfully nice but you wanna know what she said.. she said she would be too busy to make it by our house. Can you believe that? After all I do for her and she cant even come by for a simple sewing lesson." My mom spoke quickly. Both Calum and I were giggling about the story she was telling.
If you want to know what the beginning of the story consisted of, just know that my mom offered my aunt sewing lessons.
"That's crazy mom." I reply, still laughing a little.
"Why do I sound so echoey?' she questioned, completely making up the word. This made Calum laugh, a little bit too loud.
"And who was that?" She asked. My cheeks instantly got red and I turned back to look at Calum who had his hands clamped over his mouth. I could tell my mom was getting impatient but I couldn't think of a good enough lie to tell.
"Uh. Mom, you remember Calum don't you?" I asked nervously. She had met him once before at a movie theater but I was still nervous for some reason.
"OH. I remember Calum, how are you doing sweetie?" she asked Calum. He walked toward the phone so she could hear him.
"I'm fine how about you, Mrs. Carter." He said, obviously trying too hard to sound polite. I almost laughed at him but I knew that wouldn't be very nice.
"Its so good to hear from you again, its been a while. Maybe Elyse could bring you over for dinner sometime!" My mom squealed excitedly. Calum looked up at me and I quickly shook my head no.
"That sounds great! Are you free this weekend?" Calum replied, mimicking my mom's excitement. I glared at him until he looked back up at me. He gave me a cheeky shrug before continuing his conversation with my mom. I groaned before going back into my closet to find clothes.
I could hear my mom talk to Calum about some meal she was already planning to cook when we came. I couldn't help but smile a little bit as I heard him continue the conversation. I got changed inside my closet and walked back out quickly.
"Well I think we have to go now, I have to walk Elyse to her class." Calum said when he saw me already dressed.
"Oh, ok. Well I look forward to seeing you on Saturday. I hope you both have a good day, study hard." My mom said in a sad tone. Calum and I both wished her a good day and ended the call.
"I hate you." I told him as we started walking to our classes. He smiled at me and gave me a quick kiss.
"No you don't, come on this will be fun." He insisted. I rolled my eyes at him and smiled a little.
"Whatever you say." I replied before reaching down to grab his hand. It felt good to be able to walk around campus holding my boyfriend's hand.
