*New Mexico*
I lay on my stomach next to Cougar, watching our plan unfold.
We had set up an accident between an army vehicle and a civilian truck. Jensen and Roque were supposed to be the victims while Pooch waited to jack the helicopter and Clay and Aisha hid in the truck.
Jensen picked up his radio and called to Base One. "Base One, this is Cavalier 415! We've been in a collision with a civilian vehicle! Carvy's dead and Freeman's hurt real bad, we need medi-back immediately! He's got kids, Base One, he's got kids!"
I shook my head. "What an idiot."
"You missed him," came Pooch's voice through my ear piece.
"Of course I did," I said. "I missed all you guys."
"Not as much as you missed him."
"Wow, Pooch, you're really reminding me why I missed you so much," I said, sarcastically.
"Come on," Pooch said. "it doesn't take an expert to know how you feel, Jo. Plus, I saw that look of hurt on your face when he pulled up on that bike with that hot girl he had zero chance with."
I wished I was standing with Pooch so I could hit him. For all I knew, Jensen could hear us through his radio. Since what happened at the graveyard, the two of us hadn't really been speaking. And I felt bad, but not bad enough to apologize for anything. I technically had no reason to apologize.
"It's true," Cougar said to me. "The whole zero chance thing. Not one girl would even go near him."
I managed to force a semi-rude laughed. "Can you blame them? It's like he was dropped on his head one too many times as a child."
"Actually," Cougar said. "it was because he kept talking about this amazing girl he once knew named Jo that he hadn't heard from in months and thought was dead."
I looked up at Cougar. I let his words sink in. I couldn't picture Jensen at a party with a bunch of hot women, that he probably would have a chance with if he tried, but only talking about me.
"I don't believe you," I said.
"It's the truth, lobo," said Cougar. "You can even ask him."
I made a mental note of this, not that I really intended to ask, but just in case.
The medi-back helicopter flew overhead, bringing us out of our conversation. Cougar and I ducked as we watched the helicopter land a couple feet away from our fake wreckage. Once it was down, two people jumped out. I managed to identify them as a man and a woman.
The man raced for Roque, who was pretending to be dead, while the woman raced for Jensen.
"We're gonna get you patched up in no time," she told Jensen.
"Oh my God," Jensen said, almost dreamily. "Hi. What's your name?"
Cougar chuckled. I realized he was laughing at me. Apparently, I had made a not so happy face at the sound of Jensen, who was supposed to be "spinal damaged" or whatever, flirting with the female medic, who I couldn't get a good look at.
"Fire when ready, you two," Clay said to Cougar and I in our ear pieces.
"With pleasure," I said, picking up my tranquilizing gun and aiming it at the female medic. "The bitch is mine."
Cougar chuckled again as the two of us shot the two. My dart hit the medic right in the neck. As she fell to the side, I smirked. I turned to look at Cougar, who had the same smug look on his face.
Two more people, a driver and some other medic, came from the helicopter. Pooch quickly raced from his hiding spot and shot the two with his two tranquilizing guns.
"You just been chopper jacked, fellas," he said.
Clay and Aisha climbed from their hiding spots to join us.
"Where's my wild goose?" asked Clay.
Pooch climbed into the helicopter and pulled the GPS out of the dash. "GPS, got it!"
"Have you ever seen an EMT look like this?" Jensen asked Roque, pointing to the unconscious female medic.
"Really bro?" Roque questioned. "'Hi, what's your name? I have no legs but I wanna take you one a date'?"
I laughed as I helped the Losers and Aisha load our fake wreckage back onto the truck. Once finished, I turned to look at Cougar. We locked eyes for a moment before Cougar nodded to Jensen. I knew what he was saying. Ask him.
I looked over at Jensen, who stood helping Pooch put together one of the rockets we had found in the medi-back. Why they had rockets, I don't know, but we were gonna have some damn fun firing it. I looked back at Cougar, who was still looking at me, before sighing and walking over to the two.
"Did you know a cat can make a thousand different sounds and dogs can only make 10?" Jensen was asking Pooch. I wanted to ask how they got on that topic, but knowing Jensen, it could've just came out of no where. "Cats: not to be trusted."
"Do me a favor and never repeat that. Hey girl, you here to witness the fireworks up close?"
Jensen quickly turned to look at me in surprise. I gave him a small smile, shoving my hands in my pockets and standing an awkward distance away from him.
"Sorta," I shrugged.
"Okay, all set!" Pooch announced. "Ready to take a giant step for...guys who like to steal stuff, I guess. Show time!"
Jensen grabbed my shoulders and pulled me back, away from Pooch and the rocket. Pooch lifted the rocket and shot it. I slightly flinched as it went off, causing Jensen to chuckle. He absentmindedly wrapped his arms around me, holding me to him as we both watched the rocket fly.
"NOW THAT'S A ROCKET!" Pooch called with glee. Jensen and I laughed and clapped with excitement. What was it about rockets that made everything so much fun?
Jensen and I looked at each other, realizing the position we were in. Jensen quickly retracted his arms and walked for the truck, about to climb in like the rest of the Losers. I quickly grabbed his shoulder, stopping him.
"That party you went to," I started. "the birthday party with the hot girls that drove you and Cougar to the cemetery on motorbikes-"
"Jo, I don't wanna talk about it," Jensen cut me off.
"It's just a question," I assured him. "Did you really not flirt with any of the girls because you kept talking about me? And you thought I was dead?"
"Did Cougar tell you that?" I nodded. "Well, yeah, I did."
Jensen climbed into the truck without another word, leaving me speechless and stunned.
