The forest behind the monastery looked like someone had dumped a whole sack of powdered sugar over it overnight. Branches bowed under the weight, stones disappeared under clean white blankets, and every sound felt softer. Quieter. Like the world had decided to exhale for once.

Which lasted about three seconds.

"DO NOT—"
WHAM.

A snowball exploded against the side of my head.

I sputtered. "—throw that at—"

Jay cackled from behind a tree. "Too late!"

"Oh it is on," I grinned, scooping up snow with both hands.

The thing about snowball fights is that there is no strategy. There is only chaos, betrayal, and fun.

I barely got my first hit on Jay before Kai came barreling past me, already laughing, already holding an armful of snow he was messily shaping into a ball.

"Cole, MOVE—!"

He launched it.

It hit Lloyd square in the chest, knocking him backwards with a startled yelp.

Lloyd sat up, stunned for half a second—

Then his eyes lit up.

"Oh. Oh you messed up."

He launched a perfectly packed snowball with terrifying accuracy. It smacked Kai right in the face.

The red ninja wiped snow off his eyebrows. Slowly.

"...That's it."

I ducked just in time as Kai retaliated, fire not involved (thankfully), but the throw had enough force to explode against a tree and shower me in snow anyway.

"HEY," I protested. "I'm neutral!"

"No neutrals!" Nya shouted, absolutely pelting Jay from the side.

Jay yelped. "NYA— I'M FRAGILE—"

"Toughen up babe," she shot back, smirking.

Zane stood a little ways off at first, observing like he was cataloging wildlife.

Then someone—probably Nya—nailed him in the shoulder.

Zane blinked.

Looked down at the snow on his sleeve.

And then the ice ninja bent down, formed a snowball with surgical precision, and absolutely destroyed her.

I laughed so hard I nearly fell over.

"You aren't supposed to fight back!," Nya shouted, wiping her face.

Zane tilted his head. "You initiated hostilities."

I was mid-laugh when something hit me square in the back.

Hard.

I turned.

Jay stood there, innocent smile, hands behind his back.

"You wouldn't."

"I absolutely would," he said.

I tackled him.

We went down into the snow in a tangle of limbs and laughter, snow puffing up around us as we wrestled. He tried to shock me—instinctively—then yelped when nothing happened.

"Nice try," I said, flipping us so I was on top and packing snow onto his jacket.

"COLE NO—" he wheezed. "I'M GONNA FREEZE—"
