I ran.
Faster than my body should've been able to after everything we'd been through.
So many things ran through my mind—
All the people that had been hurt,
The fact that I'd just left Kai and Rue to fight the Overlord.
But I think Cole and Zane arrived to help them. I guess I'll see in a minute.
The wind howled around me, thick with smoke and ash. My heart pounded in my ears, drowning out everything else. I barely noticed the searing pain in my ribs, the exhaustion weighing down my limbs.
None of that mattered.
I had to get there.
I had left Nya behind, unconscious, hidden in the shelter of Nelson's home. I knew she was safe there, and they had promised to send her after me once she woke up—if there was still a battle left to fight by then.

Hopefully not.
When I rounded the corner, the first thing I saw was fire.
Not just a flicker, not just a flame—an inferno. It painted the ruins in a furious glow, smoke curling into the air, filling my lungs with the thick scent of char and blood. But through the blaze, through the wreckage, the chaos—
I saw Kai.
He wasn't just fighting. He was tearing through the battlefield, reckless, wild, his body moving with pure rage. His attacks were desperate, furious, unrelenting. His fire lashed out in waves, the heat distorting the air around him, his movements too fast, too violent. His voice was hoarse, raw from shouting, from screaming.
For the first few seconds, I thought it was just the heat of battle. That maybe he was fighting for survival, to stay alive, for all of us.
But then I saw his face.
And my stomach twisted.
His eyes were different.
There was something in them, something broken, something shattered. His pupils were blown wide, his face morphed into something beyond rage—grief, agony, fury so intense it twisted his features into something unrecognisable. His breathing was ragged, his flames unstable.
Something was wrong.
Something was very, very wrong.
He was a storm, a living inferno, his entire body decorated in fire as he tore through both the Overlord and...
The Mechanic?
When did—
Stop, Lloyd. There's no time to think. No time to question.
Kai's attacks weren't calculated anymore—they were pure fury. No holding back. No restraint.
And he was... winning?
I skidded to a stop, my lungs burning, my eyes scanning the wreckage.
Zane.
His body was battered, and his hand— oh shit.
His hand was torn off.
What happened here.
I looked further to the right.
Cole.
Unmoving.
My breath hitched—until I saw it. The slow, shallow rise and fall of his chest.
