I couldn't let him win.

My vines were still wrapped around his struggling body—I couldn't let him move. Tightening. Pulling. Trapping.

Keeping us safe.

For a second—just a second—I thought I had him.

I thought that we could force him to look in the mirror, and then-

His eyes flashed.

A burst of lightning exploded from his body.

The world cracked apart in a blinding flash.

My vines—my connection to them—burned.

I gasped.

And the Overlord?

He didn't even look fazed.

He turned toward me, eyes narrowing. "You're persistent."

I forced myself to stand straighter, gripping the Mirror of Shadows tighter. My hands were trembling, my body still reeling from the backlash of my powers being severed. But I didn't back down. Couldn't.

"I could say the same for you," I spat.

I felt Kai move beside me, his fists clenched, flames igniting his fists. "You okay?" He hissed.

"Yeah," I lied.

Kai didn't look convinced. But we didn't have time to argue.

Because the Overlord moved.

Fast.

Lightning arced from his palm, tearing toward us like a storm.

Kai was already there.

His fire collided with the lightning in a violent clash of heat and electricity. Sparks flew, scorching the ground around us. The force of it sent me stumbling back, but I quickly steadied myself.

Then I lunged.

We couldn't waste any time.

The mirror glinted, and caught the Overlord's attention at the last second. His gaze flicked to it, but I still swung.

He was too fast.

He sidestepped, my attack barely missing. Then his hand lashed out, a sharp crack of energy slamming into my side.

Pain flared, bright and loud, but I gritted my teeth and fought through it. I couldn't afford to slow down. Not now.

Kai was already back in the fight, flames roaring as he hurled a blast of fire straight at the Overlord's chest. Risky move, as we were only hurting Jay, but we were running out of options. And time.

Jay sidestepped.

But that was his mistake.

Because the second his eyes left mine, I struck again.

The vines exploded from the ground, wrapping around his legs and arms, yanking him backward with all the strength I had left.

And this time, I didn't let go.

I pushed back against the pain, forcing the vines tighter.

"Rue—!" Kai called.

I already knew what he was thinking.

Now.

Kai's flames surged, growing hotter, brighter. The Overlord snarled, thrashing against my hold, but he was stuck—if only for a moment.
