I decided to do something different besides sit in the clinic and overthink things. Toughening up was the next thing I had to do, and the death of Scout wasn't going to stop me. Walking down the hallway I had the thought that Medic didn't seem too swayed by Scout's death. More by the fact how close to death I'd been. This....confused me more than anything, but I kept myself from thinking too much. I heard some talking coming from the kitchen, so I made the choice to go and...just talk with people. Maybe even get myself caught in a game of cards. I quietly edged my way through the door as I looked in the room. Spy was sitting with Demo, Engie, and Pyro at the table.
"So...She was screamin'?" asked the Engineer, looking at Spy. The Spy nodded, taking a puff of his cigar before blowing a calm stream of smoke.
"As best as she could with a cloth over her mouth..." He replied, but his tone sounding strangely as if nothing about the mission had phased him. His gaze quickly found mine not soon after he'd finished talking, making everyone else look over at me. I walked over and as expected, everybody was looking at me like I was crazy.
"W...What..?" I asked. Before anyone could answer, Spy cut in.
"We were just...talking about you..." He said simply.
"I...I noticed." I said, sitting down next to Pyro. Spy seemed a little hesitant to continue, but kept telling the other men about what happened. I was learning a few things myself...like how he got out of there with me alive.
"I was still disguised as a Soldier and walking through the building when I heard a gunshot and the alarm go off, so I made my way upstairs to see what happened. I heard anozher shot and when I made it up, I'd quickly back-stabbed zhe Medic holding her down but zhe Sniper thought he was smart in slitting her throat wide open...and turns out I missed my mark on zhe Medic..." The masked man took another puff of his cigar, blowing a gentle stream of smoke across the table, his tone taking a frustrated turn in the last few words.
Pyro seemed to shuffle uncomfortably in his seat, and so did I. I didn't know it was their Medic that was holding me down, nor that Spy had even tried to kill him. Demo looked at me, his gaze going to my throat for a second. Medic had taken off the bandages before I'd left, and there wasn't a single mark left on me.
"Disregarding the rest of zhat..." Spy continued, starting to stand up. "We made it out...and we're alive...so of you don't mind, Gentlemen, I'll take my leave..." He snuffed his cigar in a nearby ashtray before getting up and leaving the room. I wasn't satisfied with where he just left the rest of the story hanging, so I would've guessed that the last thing Spy would've had to do after finding me was to grab me and run like hell. Knowing the Spy, he wasn't one to spill a lot of information just in one place.
I then took a moment then to think about how many team mates the BLUs had left.
The BLU Soldier had mentioned that their Demoman was taken down. I remembered killing the Heavy and I had no idea if he'd killed their Sniper or not, but some bitter side of me wished that he had. Their Sniper was the main one that I was pissed at. He was the one that killed Scout and the one who had tried to kill me. Now that I remembered...that wasn't the first time he'd tried to kill me.
So they still had five or six team members left against nine. I realized that we'd killed more enemies during that mission than ever intended. So at least we still had a pretty good lead.
Everyone was quiet, but it wasn't long before Demo suggested a good game of poker. So it was just the four of us playing poker on a late night, and it wasn't long at all before Demo had downed his bottle, Pyro had fallen asleep in his chair, and Engie had gone up to bed. I decided I wasn't tired enough yet to sleep and finally went to make something to eat. I'd realized I hadn't joined anyone for a proper meal in at least a couple days.
I was fishing in the fridge for leftovers, grabbing a few containers off food before I backed into someone. I turned around quickly and gasped, almost dropping everything I was holding. They quickly put a quiet hand out, as if to steady me.
"'Ey...it's alright..."
"Sniper, you almost gave me a heart attack." I said quietly, as to not wake Pyro or Demo. He gave a soft smile.
"Sorry..." He said, almost too quickly to mean it. "Look..there's somethin' I needed to ask you 'bout..." He said in a near whisper, dropping his voice to as quiet as mine was.
"What is it?" I asked, putting the food on the counter and closing the fridge.
"It's...about you 'n the Medic..."
