The house was quiet in a way the hospital never had been.
No rolling carts in the hallway. No distant alarms. No muffled voices through thin walls. Just the soft creak of settling wood, the low hum of the refrigerator, and the faint chorus of evening sounds drifting in through an open window.
Zareya stood just outside the doorway, one hand resting lightly on the frame, watching.
Sienna hovered on the threshold of her new room, elephant tucked firmly under her arm, binder pressed against her chest. She didn't rush in. She never rushed. Instead, she leaned forward slightly, eyes scanning every corner like she was mapping the space in her mind.
The room was simple, intentionally so.
Soft, warm paint on the walls. A low bed pushed against the far wall with familiar blankets from the hospital layered on top. A small shelf with carefully chosen toys. A basket near the window holding her favorite blocks and soft books. A lamp casting a gentle glow instead of harsh overhead light.
Nothing overwhelming. Nothing unexpected.
Zareya waited.
After a long moment, Sienna took one small step forward.
Then another.
Her shoes came off almost immediately, kicked aside without ceremony. She padded across the rug, toes curling slightly as she tested the texture. She crouched, pressing her palm flat against it, then looked back at Zareya as if to ask a question without words.
Zareya smiled softly. "It's yours."
That seemed to be permission enough.
Sienna moved toward the bed next, climbing up with a practiced determination that made Zareya's chest ache. She bounced once, tentative, then again, a little braver. The mattress dipped beneath her weight, responding just the way she expected.
She giggled.
It was small, quiet, but unmistakably pleased.
She flopped forward onto her stomach and hugged her elephant close, face pressed into the pillow. Then she rolled onto her back and stared up at the ceiling, blinking slowly, like she was trying to understand how this place could exist just for her.
Zareya crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed.
Sienna reached out immediately, fingers hooking into the hem of Zareya's shirt.
"I'm right here," Zareya said gently.
Sienna relaxed.

They moved through the evening routine exactly as they had practiced.
Dinner came first, simple, safe foods served on the same plate Sienna used at the hospital. She ate better than Zareya expected, glancing around the room between bites, occasionally pointing toward the window or the shelf as if cataloging her surroundings.
Afterward, they sat together on the floor and flipped through the communication binder.
Zareya held it open. "All done?" she prompted softly.
Sienna studied the page, then pressed the card with more confidence than she ever had before.
Zareya nodded. "All done."
They washed hands together in the bathroom down the hall. Sienna was cautious at first, new sink, new echoes, but she relaxed when Zareya stood close behind her, arms encircling her as they turned the tap on together.
Bath time was skipped tonight. Too much new. Too many sensations. Zareya had learned when not to push.
Instead, they changed into pajamas.
