There was this tent that my brother and I stumbled upon. It looked like a normal circus tent, but couldn't have been bigger than ten feet in any direction. Standing out by the road was a neon sign saying "Explore the tent, earn yourself twenty dollars." The tent was an unoriginal crimson color, with what looked like Christmas lights as decorations outlining it.
This was too good of an opportunity. My brother Todd and I had been looking for something to do recently. We live in a town where there isn't much else to do but watch grass grow. Oddly though, no one else in town had noticed the tent. So this tent was news to us. And we were excited. We decided that we would go during the next Saturday night. I regret ever pointing it out to him.
We were supposed to meet a bunch of our friends there but they didn't show up. I would have called them wimps but I really can't blame them now. When my brother and I pulled up along the tent--parking directly next to it seeing as how there was no parking lot--and took a moment to assess the place. It was definitely by no means big. It was a very small tent, and I really was expecting it to just have a sleeping bag inside. Him and I left the car and approached the tent. We went through the thick sheet and into the room. The room was the exact size of the tent, maybe just slightly smaller, with a light bulb hanging by a wire in the middle of the ceiling, and on the far side was a man in a ticket booth. We approached him, and I asked if we had to buy tickets. He said no, there were no tickets, but it acted more like a warning. He said that it was our last chance to turn around, and thinking back on it I'm sorry we didn't take it. When we told him that we were going to go for it he simply said "stick together."
My brother went through first, naturally ignoring what the man had said. He disappeared behind the curtains and I ran after him a second later. I thought we were going to just wind up outside. I was wrong. Instead I wound up in a room, larger than the previous room. I knew this was impossible, very impossible. And even worse...My brother wasn't in the room with me. Though I think there was some kind of joke being played in there. The only other thing in the room was a fake skeleton, perhaps the kind that teachers put in their science classrooms.
I crossed to the other side of the room, calling my brothers’ name. When I got no answer back I assumed that he had run right on ahead and passed this room in a rush. I passed the skeleton and placed my hands on the curtain. Just before I could pull it back, and cross to the next room I felt a breath of hot air pass by my neck, and it sent chills down my spine. I turned around and saw the skeleton. It had turned to look at me. I jumped back, and fell through the curtain, into the next room.
The next room looked just like the last, minus a creepy skeleton. In fact there wasn't anything out of the ordinary about the room except that it was there in the first place. I took only a few steps into the room, and then I heard panting. I couldn't see where it was coming from and that was the worst part. And then I saw it. On the floor were my shadows, both of them, but only one source of light. I thought my legs were going to buckle from the realization. I felt it looking at me.
I started walking to the other side of the room, and the other shadow didn't follow behind me. Instead it stayed right where it was. I assumed that it could have simply been painted on the ground. That was the best I could come up with. Though it was turning to watch me, I didn't imagine that.
I never even made it to the other side of the room. I made it just over halfway through, and then I made the mistake of turning around. The next thing I saw was an encompassing mass of darkness... I could feel the evil. It was the shadow, and I knew it was standing right in front of me. I could hear it whisper. "I'll get you next time you’re in the dark. I can be anywhere in the dark."
I jumped back, and went through the curtain on the far right. I thought I was going to fall out of the tent, but unfortunately I just landed in another room of equal length to the others. I looked around and saw that the only new thing was a sign that said "Wrong way." I knew what it meant. It wanted me to go back, but I knew I wasn't going to do that. I got back up, and took just one step toward the sign, and then the lights flickered. When they came back on I saw a very mangled figure in front of me. It looked like a hump of meat, nothing more, but I could see that it had arms, and some kind of face... No head though. The lights flickered again, and it was gone, but the sign had changed again and now it said "No more warnings." I took another step and, without a warning, a loud scream sounded through my ears. It brought me out of my thoughts, and certainly made me jump. I jumped back, and farther than I wanted to. I fell back through the curtain, and landed on my ass once more. I stood back up, but didn't dare turn around. I tried to go through the curtain again, but only met with a solid force. I fell on my ass again, this time with a hurting nose. I got back up, and pulled on the curtain... There was a brick wall behind it.
