"We have to go to our cabin, living inside the city is too conspicuous." Kyle said, not speaking any louder than usual despite the loud sounds from the engine and the traffic around us.
I realized that he didn't have to yell for me to hear him. As we drove along the highway, I noticed I could see better, even going at breakneck speed in the middle of the night.
"Then you'll tell me?" I mumbled sarcastically, not expecting an answer.
Kyle answered anyway. "Of course. Andy and I had no choice." He didn't offer any further information on the subject, so I gave up and enjoyed the ride.
About twenty minutes of sharp turns and having to restart my heart twice, Kyle spoke up.
"We're here." I was about to comment that I didn't in fact see anything, when he took a sharp turn onto a short gravel driveway, nearly jolting me off the back of the bike.
My mouth dropped open in as we pulled up to the large log cabin. It looked like it was pulled out of a fantasy novel. The first thing I noticed was the sprawling wraparound porch, looking as if it had never been stepped on, the plants perfectly kept. There were two huge windows on either side of the door, curtains pulled shut, light spilling through the sheer material.
"C'mon. They're waiting." He jumped off the bike, holding out a hand to help me off.
"Thanks." I mumbled, squeezing his hand once, before dropping it and marching up to the house. Kyle followed close behind, one hand barely touching the small of my back.
Before I could even finish stalking up the steps, the door was thrown open to reveal a deeply tanned woman who looked to be about 24, with blonde hair the same as my own and sparkling brown eyes.
She swept me up into a hug before I could even blink, nearly squeezing the life out of me.
"Oh, Bliss! It's so nice to see you, we've been waiting." I knew my whole body was rigid, and Kyle could feel the tension radiating from my body too, for he pressed his hand further into my back, a feeble attempt at comfort.
He cleared his throat. "Uh, Ma? I think you're squishing her."
The woman giggled, pulling away. "Oh, that's impossible." She held her perfectly manicured hand out, "I'm Emma." I went to shake her hand, only to gasp at the perfect hand that was supposed to be my own. The nails bitten down to the stubs were long and healthy, and any blemish that might have been there was gone.
"Just part of the change." She grinned, letting go of my hand, skipping into the house. Her voice followed back out, "Kyle! Bring her in."
"This is so weird." I muttered, stepping into the house, Kyle's chuckle following me.
As I walked down the hallway, everything felt surreal. The dark walls were spiraling, the room tipping to one side, as I stumbled into the wall.
"Whoa. Are you okay?" Kyle's worried face appeared in front of me, supporting me by my waist. I nodded weakly, and he pulled me to him. I used him as a crutch gratefully, becoming increasingly dizzy as we continued down the hallway, feeling as if I were about the empty the contents of my stomach all over the Sommers' shiny wooden floor.
"Ma! Something's wrong with Bliss." He called out, just as we made it to the door.
"Oh, honey. It's just the change. You were born that way, you wouldn't know." Emma smiled softly placing her hand on my forehead. Immediately some of the dizziness subsided, and I let out a sigh of relief.
"Help her sit on the couch." She instructed and Kyle complied, pulling me along to sit on the nearest white couch in the windowless room.
"Whoa. What's wrong, Bliss?" Andy questioned, sitting across from me on the coffee table.
"Just a little dizzy." I whispered, leaning my head back against the couch. I pressed my hand to my forehead, trying to breath deeply with my eyes closed.
"You're going to have to give her more Elixir." I recognized the voice immediately, and sat up my eyes snapping open.
The man from the hospital.
"Hello Bliss." I nodded a greeting to the man sitting next to Andy, and almost unconciously scooted further away.
He smiled grimly. "You have nothing to be frightened of. I only want to help you."
I shot a glance toward Kyle who smiled encouragingly, then back at the man. "You were going to tell me what's happening to me?"
"Of course." He nodded, standing up. His movements were silent and graceful, something I'd noticed about the brothers over the years.
"You'll have to drink this honey. It'll make the dizziness go away, although you'll have some extra energy I'm afraid." Emma appeared in front of me, a vial full of blue liquid in her hand.
I took it hesitantly, and ignoring the piercing stares of the others swallowed it back.
"So, what are you?" I asked, my voice immediately smoother, higher.
"What are we?" She corrected, winking. "We're immortals, silly!"
