The new assistant was shadowing me today. She was not permanent yet but a possible candidate. I knew however that she was the most competent.
I was still wrapping my head around new people in my position. Silas and Julian weren't joking sadly.
I let out a breath and told myself to calm down. They are not replacing me.
"And you do this all by yourself?" Cara suddenly asked from behind me.
I had been explaining Silas' daily calendar organisation– the colour-codes, when he would wish to have his lunch break or when it was best to schedule a call.
"Yes?– I mean, it is a puzzle at first but you get the hang of it." I turned around, looking at her. She was short, standing at five foot two and around my age, maybe younger. Her wispy auburn bangs tucked perfectly around her heartshaped face.
Worry took her expression, her lighter eyebrows dipping. "More than a puzzle actually."
I glanced at the task list and Silas' monthly calendar. It was packed. We were meeting with Ranahn in a few weeks, a visit to get a good visual of him. In the meantime, there were site visits and events to attend to.
As I was about to answer her, I felt my phone buzz in my back pocket and immediately grabbed it to check. Seeing my little sister's name pop up, I sent an automatic message. I'll call you back later.
To say the least, it was definitely a puzzle, this job and life of mine. With the other thousand things I needed to do, I put "visit family" on the mental to-do list. I feared I didn't know when I would even come to check that off. My head hurt thinking about it.
I returned my attention back to Cara. "How long have you been working at Hale inc?"
"Just about 2 years."
I sent her a smile, hoping it comforted her despite not juggling my own job the best either. "So you have experience here? You'll be fineee."
It was nearly like I was convincing myself.
"And Silas?" She grimaced.
And Silas.
What could I say about him? Where did I start?
I had no idea what we were doing. But damn, he felt good. His lips, his fingers... It was blinding me. Letting me escape all that felt suffocating.
Him included, ironically.
"Just act like yourself. If there is something he hates, it's fake." On a surface level, he was a simple creature. Short interaction. Direct. Clean. What you got, is what he meant.
"Get the job done and he won't act all grumpy. He won't say it outright, but building trust is the most important task when being an executive assistant."
