{Kathryn's POV}
I get all of my books out of my locker before heading to my first class. I had a long weekend with the whole Emily and Michael and situation, that doesn't even include my talk with Luke. He acts so different when it's just me and him. There is just something about him that I'm not so sure about. He's hiding something, and I'm determined to figure it out.
Luckily I don't run into Luke when I'm at my locker. I honestly don't know what I would say to him right now. He continues to confuse me everyday. I'm sure he wouldn't want to talk to me anyway. I walk into my hallway where my first class is and immediately catch Emily and Michael at her locker talking. Wow that happened quickly. I decide to leave them alone and head to Pre-Calculus.
I find my usual seat and sit down. Emily walks in right before the bell rings and sits down right next to me. "Hey!" She says excitedly and smiles at me. I just nod my head. I know it might seem rude, but I don't really feel like talking. Not just to her but anyone. My mind is on one thing and that one thing is Luke. My mind continues to run over everything that happened that day.
"I have graded your tests from Friday. Some of you did exceptionally well..." Mr. Bowman starts to pass them out. Great I probably didn't do well. Australia is way ahead of America when it comes to math. Some of the material that Mr. Bowman claims they're just "reviewing" is stuff I've never learned in my life. He reaches my desk. "While others didn't do so great." He lays my test on my desk. He kneels down next to me and whispers to me. "I'll see you after class Ms. Sims." I flip my test over to see a big red F on the front page. Great. Everyone is the class places there eyes on me. Thanks for making is obvious, Mr. Bowman. The last thing I want is all the attention on me.
Emily looks over at me sympathetically and I just shake my head. I've always struggled with math, but I've never done this badly. It's hard to learn new material when you never learned what comes before it. My mom definitely has high expectations when it comes to how I do in school. That's never been a problem, until now.
The class seems to drag on forever. People ask questions about their tests and Mr. Bowman works out several problems on the board. I expect that to help with my state of confusion but it doesn't at all. I'm more lost than ever. The bell finally rings and everyone heads to break leaving me to talk to Mr. Bowman.
I walk over to his desk. He looks at me and smiles at me sympathetically. I don't want your pity. I think to myself. I'm guessing you know why you're here." I just nod. He begins to tell me what I already know, "You didn't do so well on that last test. I understand you're new and have moved across the world, but I will not slow down for you. You're going to need to catch up with the rest of the class." He sighs.
"Yes sir I understand." I just look at the floor. I rather not look into his eyes and see disappointment.
"Have you thought about getting a tutor?" He asks me out of the blue.
"It has crossed my mind before, yes."
"I strongly recommend you get one. I would try to get one in one of the upper grades simple because they see this type of material often and are used to doing what this class requires. I would try to help you, but I'm incredibly busy, and I don't know how much time I would have to tutor you."
"I'll try to get one as soon as possible." I nod.
"You're a bright student, and you have great potential. Please don't give up on yourself. Ask around I'm sure someone would love to help you." He smiles before dismissing me.
I honestly don't know who to ask to tutor me. I don't know anyone that is older than me that I'm comfortable around. There are definitely downsides to moving.
I find Emily in the cafeteria sitting at a table with Michael. I walk over to their table, "Mind if I sit with you guys?" I ask them.
"Of course not!" Emily pats the seat next to her and I sit down. We just sit in silence for a couple minutes before Emily speaks up,"Everything okay?"
I shake my head. "What's wrong kiddo?" Michael asks.
"I'm failing pre-calculus."
"So that's why Mr. Bowman wanted to talk to you?" Emily says.
"Yeah he wants me to a tutor. He recommended me asking someone older. I don't really know anyone so I was wondering if either of you did?"
Emily turns to face Michael and they both smile at each other. "Yeah I think we know someone who could help you. We'll talk to them." Michael smirks.
"Really? You guys are lifesavers." I sigh in relief.
"We know." They say in unison then start laughing.
"I honestly can't take how cute you are it's sorta disgusting." I scrunch up my nose.
"Yeah we're pretty disgusting." Michael leans in to kiss Emily and I take that as my cue to leave. I grab my bag and turn around. In the process I feel myself run into something, and I hear something fall on the ground.
I turn around and find a very unhappy Luke with books scattered all over the floor including his phone. My breath catches when I see all the tiny pieces of glass surrounding it.
"Oh my god Luke I'm so sorry." I drop to the floor picking up a book but he snatches it out of my hand and gives me the death glare.
"Let me help you." I try to get the other books but he pushes my hand out of the way, making me frustrated.
"I don't need your help." He says harshly. I brush it off and start pick up his phone. I flip it over an examine it's front screen. It definitely is shattered. There's not a spot that isn't crack. Good job, Kat, what else are you going to mess up?
"Let me buy you a new one." I say, my voice shaking. He snatches the phone out of my hand and puts it in his pocket.
"Would you just leave me alone?" Luke yells. I know everyone's eyes are on me now. I hate when all the attention is on me.
His words hurt. I feel my eyes start to water. I don't say a word to him or even look him in the face. I walk past him and leave the cafeteria before I start crying in front of everyone.
I try so hard to not let anything he says get to me, but it never works. Each time I fail and each time he succeeds.
