|Chapter Four: Saying (A Temporary) Goodbye.|
Wednesday.
Olivia.
Over the past few days she had somehow managed to transform herself into a boy. She had gone shopping the day after her talk with Essie. Apparently Essie was trying to go for a “hipster chic” kind of look for the new and improved “Oliver.”
Yeah that’s right Oliver. Oliver was going to be Olivia’s new boy name, original isn’t it? The plus side to the name was that she could have people call her Oli because she would recognize it and at least respond to it, unlike having a name like Jay or something.
The day after Olivia had gone wig shopping with Josie in the morning. At first Josie suggested that Olivia just cut her hair, but Olivia refused. If there was one thing she wasn’t willing to give up, it was her hair. It took her two years to grow it out to the length it was now. For some reason when she was a sophomore in high school she thought it would be a great idea to cut her hair above her shoulders. Worst. Decision. Ever.
The other half of the day and most of Monday and Tuesday, Tanner had been teaching her on how to act like a guy. She learned that she should never ever, ever have decent posture, for most guys slacked and slumped over as they walked. She learned that most guys gave each other a curt nod as a greeting as opposed to a hug or a cheerful smile. And most importantly, if she was going to be doing any kind of hugging, it had to be done in the form of a “bro-hug.”
For some reason guys didn’t hug like normal human beings for they felt the need to do some sort of weird hand slap-and-slide into a conjoined fist sort of thing. They then proceeded to get close, but not close enough where it would be considered “gay” and pat each other on the back a few times before separating.
Olivia found the “bro-hug” way too complicated for its own good. Why go through all of that trouble to sort of hug, when they could actually just hug? She wanted to ask Tanner, but she was too afraid of what his answer might be; she didn’t want to have to sit through a lecture of the reasons guys hugged the way that they did, she could find that out through observing when she got to the academy.
She had also learned that guys tended to call each other “bro” and “dude” a lot, not that it was a new piece of new information because she had already noticed that at school, but she appreciated Tanner’s help anyway. Another important thing that Tanner had taught her was that guys were very physical with each other. She made a mental note to try and avoid physical contact unless it was absolutely necessary.
She had managed to get most of her breasts strapped down tightly to her chest, but it still seemed that there were slight bumps where her breasts were supposed to be. If she pressed her palms against her chest, she could still feel the softness of them, none of which came from the ace bandages she was using to strap them down.
She sat on the front porch with her three best friends as she waited for Janine to appear in her car. It was well after Brookstone High was let out for the day, and most of the afternoon was spent with the four of them packing up Olivia’s suitcases with her new wardrobe and other essential items (i.e. tampons, which she had yet to figure out on how to hide).
Essie gave Olivia a once over. “You want to know something Livvy?”
Olivia looked up at Essie through her eyelashes. “Hm?”
“If you really were a boy right now, I’d totally fuck you.” She said bluntly.
Olivia blinked rapidly in surprise as Josie and Tanner let out a bout of rambunctious laughter. “What?”
Essie shrugged as she looked out toward the quiet street. “I don’t know, you just look good as a guy.” She smirked. “Then again I think it’s also with the help of my keen fashion sense.” She said winking at Olivia. “I must say that I did a damn good job at dressing you.”
Olivia was nearly devoured by her new boy clothes—at least that’s how she felt anyway. Essie had told her to wear a pair of white skinny jeans with a red belt, a short sleeved yellow V-neck, a black fedora and a pair of black Vans. Olivia had to agree that Essie knew how to dress a guy in the best fashion.
Janine pulled up to the curb and beeped her horn twice. Olivia grinned and waved at Janine as she stood, gathering her duffle bag and suitcase with her. Essie stopped her quickly, and moved the fedora on Olivia’s head, having her wear it on the crown of her head. “There. Hmmmm, I can’t help, but feel like something’s missing.” She tapped her chin for a moment before a light bulb seemed to go off in her head (a very rare light bulb). “Oh!” She reached into her pocket and pulled out her nonprescription horn rimmed glasses. She slipped them onto Olivia’s face. “There, now you look absolutely perfect.”
Olivia backed up from Essie. “Well I guess that this means goodbye guys.” She said as tears brimmed her eyes.
Tanner rolled his eyes. “Guys don’t openly cry like that Liv; you have to keep your emotions in check while you’re there.”
“And let’s not forget to make some super cute friends while we’re there okay?” Josie said with a wink.
“Besides Liv, we’re going to come up and visit you or you can come down here and visit. You guys will have your weekends free, it’s not like you’re never going to see us again.” Tanner added lightly with a pat to Olivia’s shoulder.
Olivia sucked in a deep breath and nodded. “You’re right. I’m going to see you guys.” She nodded to herself this time. “It’s nice to know that I’ll have your support while I’m there. I don’t think I would have been able to do this completely by myself guys. Thanks.”
Tanner flicked Olivia’s forehead. “Dude, you have to use your man voice or you’ll be found out ASAP.” He warned.
Olivia paused before she realized what he said. She cleared her throat before speaking. “You’re right man.” She said her voice taking on somewhat of a masculine tone. Thank God for drama class. She nodded to them once more. “Cool, I guess I’ll see you guys next weekend then.”
She kissed Josie and Essie on the cheek (something they had always done in greeting) and they pretended to swoon. She rolled her eyes as she fist bumped Tanner and walked toward Janine’s cute red Prius. She shoved her bags into the trunk of the car and before she stepped into the Prius she waved one last time to her best friends.
Bradford Academy, here I come! She thought as the car pulled away from her house.
