The atmosphere in the classroom was cold. As the lightning flash across the dark, night sky I shivered.
Mr Bowen read out of the atlas, his boring voice echoing through my head like a record stuck on one boring song, over and over again.
I wished I was at home instead of here. It wasn't my fault that the whole of the matrics were punished to Saturday night detention. I took out my mirror and stared at my reflection. My long black hair framed my face. My brown skin shone in the artificial light in the room caused by the dim light bulb hanging from the white ceiling.
"Miss Evelan, we do not appreciate vanity in this school." Mr Bowen said, startling me.
"Sorry. " I said closing my mirror. Man do I really hate this man!
A powerful being like me should not have to sit in the dark at night staring at the blank wall waiting for time to tick by.I was no ordinary being. No not at all. I was actually a binder- no not a binder that you write notes in. A binder was a powerful being with extraordinary abilities. We were sort of like witches, only we hated to term ourselves as those, since they were slightly differrent to us...they were more sly and sneeky and disgusting in a way. Basically they were like the misfit versions of Binders and therefore they were extremely well known in fairy tales.
Binders were split up into two groups. Those who had a certain darkness to their powers and those who had an air of light to their powers. We simply called ourselves Dark Binders and Light Binders, and their was not much difference between us.I was a light binder. Not only that, but I was also heir to the throne of light binders- No I'm not bragging. My coronation was just in two weeks time. Then I would be able to be the most powerful being in this world.
Boom!
Another crash of fierce lightning pierced through my ears almost making me jump up in fright.
"Ok matrics, you may leave now,"the old Mr Bowen said with a sly smirk on his old wrinkly face.
My mouth dropped open. I was shocked at his lack of concern for us, it was storming outside and he wanted us to stand in the pouring rain! Guess teachers really did hate my generation.Miyah looked at me in shock as well, and Leyandra slammed her books on the desk. Of course they would be mad, all three of us had just told Leyandra's mom to fetch us in half an hour.
Jackson got up from his table and walked up to us.
"Want a ride?"He asked.
Leyandra looked at him and said, "over my dead body!"
"Come on guys he's my friend too,"I begged.
"And Leyandra, you have a date with Adam!" Miyah cooed.
Leyandra eventually gave in, sighing and saying that she would only do it for the sake of her hair.
We soon exited the eery classroom filled with teenagers and started walking toward the exit.
The rain eventually started falling from the dense clouds in the sky that was now almost black due to the time of day.
"You have plans for this week?" Jack asked suddenly eyeing me suspiciously.I nodded
"Why?""Just wanted to know... you know your birthday is soon..." he started trailing on but I cut him off.
"And I will not be doing anything for it. I already told you, I have important business in that day," Yeah, important business like preparing for my corination.
Jack sighed.
"You know sometimes you can be a real stick in the mud Eve," he said with a frown.
I just smiled and walked onward with Jack. Jack decided that he would run out into the rain and start the car. As soon as Jack ran outside I started inspecting him like a scientist would inspect his experiment. He had pale skin, the colour of pale white roses. His lips were full and red. He had thick brown hair and crystal blue eyes which sort of shon like the headlights of a car. He was extremely attractive to every girl except for Leyandra and I. Even though his appearance appealed to me, I had always thought of him as one of my best friends.
"Jack could you hurry up please, I'm freezing!" I shouted over the pouring rain drops.
"My car needs to warm up Eve. Can you calm down?" He shouted back.
I rolled my eyes at him and then turned to Leyandra.
"So do you know where he's taking you?" I asked.
She smiled, "No, its a surprise!"
Leyandra twirled her smooth straight, brown hair which was tied up neatly into a pony.
Her green eyes shone with a girlish twinkle.
"Well you have got to tell us all the details!" Miyah smirked giving me a she won't last a second look which I returned instantly trying to contain my laughter.
Leyandra was a beautiful girl who could be perfectly happy one moment, but she had a temper, especially when it came to annoying boys, and from what I learned, Adam was quite bothersome. Okay maybe it was an understatement. The car finally started with icy puffs of vapour escaping from the exhaust.
I ran toward the car eager for the warmth of the heater.
As I opened the door, warm air pushed itself into my face almost knocking me down to the ground.
"You know you didn't have to create a car-sauna. We aren't in Antarctica!" I said sarcastically sliding onto the front seat. Jack laughed at my comment while Miyah and Leyandra slipped in and sighed as the warm air made contact with their bear skin. Why they did not have jackets, nobody knows."Ley are you sure you want to go through with this date, I mean you barely know the guy," Miyah suddenly said with concern lacing each word.
Leyandra nodded,"sometimes you have to take risks Miyah, and who knows, maybe he is the guy of my dreams!!"
I couldn't help it anymore, I just burst out laughing so hard that my stomach was aching.
" What?" Ley asked frowning.
" You said that about the last few guys you went out with Ley," I said clutching my stomach.
" Well this one is different!" She said pouting like a little child. She then turned to the window and started glaring daggers at the blurry objects passing by. Poor pedestrians.
I on the other hand turned toward Jackson who had a large grin plastered on his face.
"You know you want to laugh Jack." I said. He shook his head smiling widely.
"Come on Jack, just laugh already!" I said enjoing this way too much.
"Nope." He said. Then he just started shaking with laughter, making the car shake. I turned to look at Leyandra who was turning redder than red with pure anger. Thank goodness it was cold outside.
The rest of the drive to Leyandra's house was silent until we reached there. Leyandra and Miyah got out because Miyah was apparently staying over at her house. So Jackson dropped them off, leaving Jackson and I alone in the car. Awkward."Why doesn't Leyandra like you?" I asked after some awkward silence. Jackson shrugged," She thinks I have a crush on her-which I don't, and you know Leyandra and her hard-to-get tactics."
I nodded. Leyandra was a bit extreme when it came to guys, and we all knew that very well. We finally made it to my house, a pale blue coloured two - story house surrounded by greenery and plants."Thank you very much Jack, see you at school," I said smiling. He nodded.
I then exited his car and went into my house. My Aunt was already in her room sleeping, so I went to the lounge and put on the television. There was nothing very interesting on the human channels so I waved my hands in front of the television and immediately it changed to the binder channels.
The news was on, and I was the top story. People were placing bets on who I actually was since no one had actually seen me, and scientists were even testing out theories to find me. How funny it was. None of them were even close to finding out who or where I was.
Then suddenly an interview between a security guard caught my attention.
"There has been rumours of dark forces trying to capture the princess, but I do not know if these rumours are true. Hopefully it's all just a hoax," the beefy binder said to the thin news reporter.
I froze in shock, letting all of what he said sink in.
It can't be...no it must all be a hoax. No one knew where I was...right?Convincing myself more and more that it was just a rumour, I switched the television off and went to bed. Sinking into the warm blankets and the soft pillow.
The thoughts of me being captured did not stop though. The continued on and on until I eventually passed out.
