The engine made a low rumble. It was the only sound to be heard, the repetitive heartbeat of the car digging into Delaney's ears.
"Where are we going?" She slumps in her seat.
"Just wait," carter assures her."Oh God, you're taking me to a church, arent you!"
"What so i can show you the light? The way?"
Delaney knods her head
"Actually no," carter says "the first stop is one of the sweeter goodnesses in life"
Delaney rolled her eyes and twiddled her thumbs. She could believe she'd gotten in the car in the first place. Now she was stuck all night with some hippy kid she used to know.
Unlike Delaney, Carter looked like he had an amazing summer.
His skin glowed freshly tan, his blonde hair glazed with sun highlights, his car even smelled salty like the beach.Carter was an athletic guy, a triple player one might call him. Football in the fall, hoops in the winter, baseball in the spring.
Delaney was never as shallow as to lable him as a jock, but it was definitely his crowd. The car screeched to a stop.
"Alright, we're here." Carter unbuckles his seat belt.
Delaney looks at the empty parking lot."So you've come here to murder me?" She says opening the door.
"Nope." Carter says grinning, pionting to a fluorescent restaurant sign.
Maggie Mae's Pancake house and diner.
"You've got to be kidding me."
Delaney says under her breath.
"Is there some wise old man that works here or something? Does this place have all the answers?"
"Nope," carter says holding the door open for her "just pancakes."
The two sit down at booth.
A middle aged woman struts over to them.
"What'll it be kids?"
" four orders of flapjacks and two sundaes please." Carter exlaimes witb wide eyes.
The waitress hoots,
"Goodness, what's the occasion?""Oh, just living life to the fullest."
He turns his head to Delaney, curling his lips. She had to admit, this guy was amusing.
The waitress left them,
"Four pancakes!?" Delaney exclaimed
"Four orders of pancakes, so probably around nine or ten."
"Jesus! How am I gonna pay for that!"
"I was thinking you would repay through your will,"
Delaney couldn't help but giggle. Carter was burst with goofy looks and witty remarks, she'd wish more people in her life woul've been like him.
"Okay," Carter starts "on fulfilling the last night of your life, whats you're death wish, whats the best thing you can think of, anything in the world-"
"Sex."
Delaney says with a serious face.
Carter doesn't say anything, also not objecting in anyway, he was poundering the idea"DUDE!I'm kidding"
she says raising her eyebrows
Carter tries to muffle a laugh, but his red burning cheeks seem to get in the way. They sit awkwardly for a minute, then the waitress comes in with an armfull of plates.
Carter's face lights up like a christmas tree when he sees the pancakes. After her departure he says
"look, a life supply of pancakes! Being the last night of your life I mean."
For some reason, his joke didn't seem to sting, instead Delaney just really wanted to eat some pancakes."Ah, before we dig in-" carter shuffles through his jacket pockets taking out four prescription bottles.
"Have to take em' with every meal" he says causaly.
"Woah, Carter, you sick?" Delaney says
"Sick enough not to play football this year-but nothin' too serious should be ballin' by winter." He says while washing down a couple pills.
Delaney could tell the conversation was over.
She stares at the heavy plate infront of her.
"Delaney? "
Carter says, his mouth already in jumbles from the abundance of pancakes.
" I can't eat these." She says quietly.
"Why?" Carter asks " you gotta food allergy? eating disorder? what?"
Delaney sniffed her nose, trying to laugh.
"No," she answered him
"It's just A LOT of pancakes."Almost as if she were drowning in the plates.
Carter sighs, not knowing what to think. Slowly it turns into a laugh.
"It's only pancakes."
"No," she disagreed with him
" its a ton of pancakes that i could never possibly finish, and even if i filled my stomach to the brim to full capacity, there would be pancake tummy guts EVERYWHERE!!"
Carter lets a big poppa bear laugh in rich through his shinning teeth.
"I promise that if you puke, I'll clean it up."
He shoves the fork in his mouth.
Carter continues to eat, as Delaney does not.
As he swallows he says"You know you shouldn't stop at something because it looks to difficult. "
He stops from his pancakes and looks at Delaney.
"These could just be the best pancakes in the world" he says trying to convince her.
But Delaney had a feeling he was referring to way more than breakfeast food.
His gaze doesn't break from her.
She uses all her will power but--"Ughh! Fine, I'll eat some!" She groans.
Carter layers a liguidy blanket of maple syrup as she cuts a poece with her fork. They reach her like an unexpected kiss with axious excitement and tender sweetness.
She groans in delight."These are good pancakes,"she says in a mouthful
"What did I tell you! The many wonders of life "
They stuffed themselves to a full hearty meal. They got up to leave.
As much as Delaney enjoyed her meal, she didn't know if it was enough to make her want to stay.
