Chapter Nine

“What shall do now?” Alice asked her two companions. “I don’t know any of his relatives or work colleagues, it’s only us who knows that he is here”

“Where does he work?” James asked.

“Along Muindi Bingu street, a courier service, I think called Quick service parcel Delivery Services. We could check to see whether it’s listed in the telephone directory, they may have contacts of his family.” Alice said.

They walked up to the reception and inquired as to whether they could get a telephone directory of  Nairobi area.

It was available and so was the Parcel service business.

They tried the cell number Listed.

“Hello, Quick service Parcel delivery, may I help you”? A male voice came on.

“Am Alice Mutemi and I wanted to know whether you know a Peter Wanjao?”

“Yes I do, he is our dispatch clerk, am Ian Murithi, the accountant. So what about Peter, he owes you money?”

“Listen mister, am not a slut following up on her overdue payments, he is my friend and we live in the same plot, right now he has been admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital and we do not know the outcome!” Alice had become hysterical.

James sat next and put his arm to comfort her as he mouthed, “It will be alright”

She smiled back in appreciation.

“What! Peter admitted, what happened, sick, accident what happened?”

“I found him in a state of paralysis and in semi-coma this morning and the doctors are not able to discover his problem.”

“Ok. Am on my way, where do I get you.

“ First floor waiting bay.”

OK give me 15 minutes I live nearby.”

Then he hung up.

“He is on his way.” Alice informed the two.

“What did he ask that made you lose it?”

“If I was following up on my dues.”

That cracked them. They laughed for the first time in a long while.

At that moment the doctor treating Peter strode in with a downcast face. The trios’ heart sank.

-          It’s all over. They all thought

“Doctor, we expected it, it was just a matter of time, we understand you did your best.” James said as the all stood up.

“No!!” Alice screamed, “It is not over and it’s not going to be over.”

“He is still alive, but the situation is nothing that has ever been seen before and am not sure it will be seen again unless the world is coming to an end.” The doctor solemnly said.

That statement confused them. Coming from a doctor, it was a weired statement.

“What do you mean doctor?” Alice asked.

“What we are witnessing today has never  been recorded as an occurrence in any publication, that goes for magazines, reports, books pamphlets, memos, or anything that doesn’t involve Sci-Fi like movies..”

“In English please, you’re beginning to freak me out.”  Alice protested.

“We’re still trying to come to terms with what we’re witnessing but you will definitely be updated on any progress we make.”
