Chapter 18

I look up at Alex. But he doesn’t make any noise; I go back to my position and try to sleep again. Another groaning noise. I look up again. Nothing. I put my head back down onto the bed and take in a deep breath to calm myself.

I feel Alex’s warm fingers move slightly. Or was it my fingers? I look up again and see Alex trying to open up his eyes. I instantly stand up.

“Alex, sweetie, it’s Mila.” I say with panic in my voice.

He groans again and rubs his closed eyes with his left hand as I was still holding onto his right one. I push the button on the wall which would call the doctor to come over. The doctor and a few nurses barge in through the door seconds later. I try to pull back but Alex tightens his hold on me.

I whisper in his ear whilst the doctor and the nurse check everything, “I’ll only be a minute, I just need the nurses and doctor check up on you.” I then give a peck on his cheek to reassure him.

I step back with the blanket over my shoulder and watch the nurses and the doctor check everything. After a few minutes they leave whilst telling me that he’s fine. I sit back down in my seat and Alex holds onto my hand again.

The thunder roars. I jump in surprise. Alex looks up at me with a scared expression on his face.

He shifts on the bed, making some space, “Will you sleep next to me?”

I get up from my chair and sit down on the edge of the bed. Alex pats the bed and I move closer.

“Mila, lie down with me?” He asks as he stretches his right arm out. I lie down resting my head on his upper arm. He covers us both then with his left hand he holds onto my right hand and brings it to his chest, slightly wincing whilst doing so.

“Mila, how did I get here?” He quietly asks.

“It’s all my fault.” I whisper with tears brimming in my eyes remembering his limp less position when I first saw him.

“No.” He says disbelievingly.

“What do you remember?” I ask.

“Gang of boys. Beat the shit out of me. You were wiping blood from my cheeks. That’s it. What time is it?” He asks.

“We brought you to the hospital, me and Ryan. And it’s quarter to three.” I say after looking up at the clock.

“How long have I been here?” He asks.

“Since three in the afternoon.” I yawn.

“You go to sleep.” He whispers.

I slowly fall asleep in the warmth of his body.

I wake up from the pain in my lower stomach. I need to pee. Need to pee. I open up my eyes to see the sun trying to get through the big windows that we’re covered by some blinds. I look around the room; it was 8:30am. Alex was sleeping with his front up, I had my head on his chest and our fingers were interlaced with each other. I slowly pull my hand away from his and rub my eyes. I slowly get off the bed, trying not to wake Alex. I slip into my shoes and grab my toothbrush and the toothpaste from the bag, the nurse comes into the room with a smile on her face.
