Amelia’s POV:

Mother was going on and on and on...

"Amelia! How could you?! This could’ve meant the world to us!”

Amy joined us and stood very near mother. We were currently in the dining room. There was a huge chandelier hung at the top of the room. The walls were blood red and there were intricate designs carved into the walls. The floor was wooden with a dark red rug in the middle. The dining table was very large and nearly filled up the entire room. It was a rich brown and the table had goblets, plates, cutlery and candlesticks all arranged neatly onto the table.

“Miss...”

Amy tried to get my mother’s attention but failed as she was too busy ranting at me.

“Did you really think that you could just get away with not turning up at all?!”

“Miss...”

I decided on not telling her at all about what had happened earlier. It would be best to not get her worried. But I had no idea about what to do with my dress so I just walked in like this and haven’t been able to leave to freshen up since I arrived back home.

“The state of your dress! How do you think I’ll even be able to get it out?! How did you get it like that?!”

“Like I said before mother, on the way to the castle I asked for the driver to stop so that I could stretch my legs for a bit. Once I’d gotten outside I fell down a ditch.”

“Well, we all know that didn’t happen!”

Mother was getting really annoyed now.

“Miss...”

Mother turned around and jabbed her finger into Amy’s face.

“What! What do you want?! Can’t you see I’m busy?!”

“There’s a letter which I think you should read. It’s from the King.”

She passed a letter to my mother and she immediately calmed down. I could see her eyes skimming the text and she looked up seeming quite pleased with herself.

“Amelia? Read this.”

She sounded like she could barely contain her excitement. Excitement for what? Whatever’s in that letter must be good. She passed over the letter very carefully as if it might burn and never be seen again if not treated with care. Something really, really good must be in that letter. I turned the letter over and written in italics was:

I am deeply sorry to write that, because of my son’s duties, we could not let the ball take place. Because of this I am overjoyed to write that tomorrow at noon there shall be another ball at the palace. Everything shall be the same and we only wish that you shall be as joyous as we are about this ball.

Yours Sincerely,

King Tragoth

Wow! So I never missed the ball at all. So what am I going to do about my dress? My mask? My shoes?

“Mother! This is excellent news! But what about my clothes?”

“It will all be taken care of. I was going to give you a dress for your birthday but I think if I gave it to you now it would be put towards a better cause and I can always get you something else.”

“Really? You must show me it! What about a mask and shoes?”

“All sorted as well we were planning for you to have a masquerade ball for your birthday anyway.”

“Then show me it!”

I was so excited mother always knew what I wanted and we had the best tailor in town.

“Amy, go get the dress, mask and shoes from my room.”

Amy curtseyed and left the room.

Mother sat down at the table and sipped some wins from one of the goblets. It was silent until Amy came rushing into the room carrying a big golden bag. She opened it but mother quickly stopped her.

“I know I already done this to you before but you shall not see it till tomorrow when you go to the ball.”

“Mother! Please! It’s only a dress!”

“It might be just a dress but it is a very special one which you shall not be seeing till tomorrow when you go to the ball!”

Mother had her mind set and she wasn’t letting me see the dress. It’s a shame; I really want to see it...

“Now darling, hair up or down...”
