Amelia’s POV:
We hadn’t woken up that long ago and I asked Natalia,
“What was it like growing up as a child being a witch?”
She turned away and when she looked back at me I could see the blankness in her eyes.
“It was horrible but I survived.”
Natalia’s POV:
I’m finally turning ten today! I’d come up onto the hill next to our village in the morning and I’ve stayed here mulling over my thoughts. Today I’m going to finally be considered a fully fledged witch. We’re having the ceremony today where mum and granny bless me with the gifts of our goddess Nathaniallaria; I was named after her in hope of me being as good a sorceress as she was. Sadly the only way I can find out how strong my true powers are is by having that ceremony. And today the day has finally come! Oh how I hope that I will be a powerful sorceress like she was. The trees were still and unmoving in the background, the green freshly cut grass was gently tickling my feet and the sun was high in the sky shining brighter than ever before. It was like nature was merging with my own happiness so that we could feel as one. Our village wasn’t that rich but we got by, our houses were quite sturdy and if anything went wrong (on the rare occasion) then we’d easily be able to use magic to fix the problem. Our entire village specialises in nature and we all are at peace with nature so we normally don’t have problems with droughts or little crops. All the people who live in my village can use magic, some are stronger than others but we all pitch in to help. Mum and granny are the best and strongest sorcerers in the entire village and they are always the ones who initiate the ceremony, to have your own family do your ceremony is a very special but heavy burden. I’d been brought up my entire life to be able to control the elements and my parents always help me along the way. I must live up to my family’s standards, even if they tell me it doesn’t matter to them if I’m not a very good sorcerer. They helped me every step of the way and to disappoint them on the very last step would be a complete humiliation. I’ve never cared much for anything but when it comes to my family and witchcraft they are one of my most important things to me. I’ve never wanted anything more in my life than having a happy family and being good at witchcraft. My mum as a young child was very talented and could do a lot of magic and it was the same with my granny. I could already control one of the elements, air. Air was my speciality and I had a tendency to control it as a young child baffling my parents. My father was not as good a sorcerer as my mother but he was one of the strongest males in the village, this combination made it easier for me to be able to use my magic.
My brother, Nathaniel, also named after Nathaniallaria, had his ceremony last year and it was beautiful. I only hope that mine would be half as beautiful. He was only a year older than me and it shows that he is quite powerful when it comes to using the element Earth. He isn’t as powerful as me but that’s natural as women are usually better at magic than men. I told mum to get someone to call me once the ceremony is ready. I knew that at the ceremony I had to show-case my most attuned elemental skill, in my case air. So I started to practise.
I slowly sat down on the floor cross- legged and took a deep breath to calm my nerves. As I slowly started to tune into the sounds and movement of the air the wind calmed down. I could sense the tiny bubbles of air around me and with my mind completely at ease I opened my eyes and I could see every single tiny bubble of air. I stood up slowly trying to keep my calmness and I took a fighting stance. I ground my feet into the ground to keep my body in place and I lifted my arms up into the sky, I spread my hands out and shouted out.
“Winds of life,
I command you to obey me,
Stand by me,
Protect me and others,
Don’t ever leave my side,
And we,
Together,
Shall defeat all evil,
And we shall be joined as one,
Goddess Nathanialaria protect me always and grant me this one wish!”
My prayer echoed through the entire woods, and as if she heard me the once still trees thrashed wildly and this gave me the courage to continue my practice. My prayer isn’t as strong as the one which is going to be said tonight at the ceremony but it was stronger than most people could say. I struck my hands out in front of me and pulled at the tiny bubbles and they slowly formed into one huge bubble. It was this bubble which was completely unseen to anybody else’s eye which was the upside about air, only the person controlling it could see it and others could not. I slowly moved my hands in a circular motion and the bubble got bigger and stronger till I was sweating from trying to control so much air. If mum or granny were here they would probably tell me off for trying to control too much. If you control too much then sometimes you can lose control and it can unleash havoc. I stopped my hands from moving and admired the bubble in front of me; it was about the size of one of the houses in our village. If I lost control on this one then it could send someone flying. The air was moving in swirls and the pattern was beautiful. Not many people could ever behold such a beauty in a lifetime, especially those who couldn’t do magic. We are hidden from the outside world so we have never been attacked the King. Safe inside our own little bubble, a bit like the one I am beholding right now. The sight was so beautiful!
“Natalia!”
What! I suddenly lost my control and the bubble burst flying straight into the person who had shouted my name. I blacked out for a couple of seconds and when I opened my eyes I found myself lying on the floor. Guess this is what happens when you use your powers when you aren’t strong enough to use them. I slowly lifted my head and I saw Ethan lying still under a tree. He must have fallen back from the impact of the wind hitting him. He was the strongest male in our village and I’ve had a crush on him ever since I first set my eyes on him. It was a shame that all the girls in the villages practically throw themselves at him. I quickly ran forwards to help him but it seemed like he was unconscious.
