Chapter 5: Monica

Zayn doesn’t think I’m ready for the public eye. I’m thankful for his concern, but I think I can handle myself. I didn’t argue with him though because I’m just grateful for the time that I have with him now and I don’t want to spoil that. It’s not every day that you go on a date with your favorite popstar, well maybe this isn’t a date, right?

“What have you been doing all day?” Alex asks me. I frown, leaning against the counter.

“Just riding a few rides. I came here with a friend, but they left a little bit ago to do some family things. They’ll be right back,” I tell her, technically not lying. She shrugs, reorganizing the animals at her game yet again.

“Everything good between you and Kaleb so far?” I ask her, knowing that she’d blush. My assumptions correct as the redness rises to her cheeks, matching the highlights in her hair.

“We haven’t even been dating for a day yet,” she responds.

“So?”

“I really like him, okay? I didn’t think I would this much and I know he doesn’t seem like it, but he’s the perfect boyfriend so far. He doesn’t smother me and is such a gentleman. How did I deny my feelings for him all this time? It was my best friend all along,” she mutters with a smile, seeming lost in her own thoughts. I may not like the kid, but she’s happy and that makes me happy.

“If you say so,” I respond and she gasps, smacking me lightly with the stuffed ice-cream cone she’s holding. I laugh at her response as she just shakes her head.

“Enough about me. Everything okay between Abby and Jared?” she asks me and I frown.

“No. He’s gotten worse if anything. He flipped out because she was a few minutes late to his house and started crying at her feet. Out of stress, she went home telling him that they needed a ‘break’. We all know they just need to break up now,” I tell her remembering what she had told me this morning. She was crying so hard and I felt so bad. I offered for her to come along with me today, but she said that she didn’t think that Jared would approve. I felt so bad for her.

“He’s such an ass. She can do so much better than him if I’m being honest,” Alex says and I nod with her agreeing. Abby is such a nice girl and can get so much better. Before I can get another word in, Alex is sucked up in another customer that is accompanied by a little girl who wants to throw the ball. Her blonde hair is tied up in pigtails and her pink dress is swirling with every move she makes. She’s adorable.

“Hey,” a voice says suddenly close to me and I turn around to see that it’s Zayn. He’s smiling down at me, a sight that looks perfect with the setting sun behind him.

“Yo,” I respond trying to be casual, but I can’t ignore the butterflies that have erupted in my stomach.

“Let’s go before they notice,” he says motioning towards the group with the little girl. That’s when I realize it’s the rest of the lads and Lux. Awe baby Lux is so adorable! If only Alex knew that that was who was playing her game. Zayn has my hand and is dragging me over to the sky ride that would take us to the end of the park. I felt bad, leaving without saying goodbye, but this is how Zayn works.

“Please do not spit or rock your chairs. Keep your hands inside the lift at all times. Thank you and enjoy your ride,” the attendant says quickly, strapping us into the moving chair. It’s a bit jumpy at first, but I like this ride a lot just because it’s so peaceful. I like it even more now that I’m alone with Zayn. He takes my hand and I lean into his side just a bit, feeling like this moment is perfect. Soon enough, just as I predicted would happen, the sky ride stops as we’re right above the Mary-go-round. Zayn looks at me a bit confused.
