The soul was gone before the nurse was done with me and he didn't come back.
The next time I woke up, I looked around hoping I'd see the soul, but my mom was already working on her laptop from a corner. She looked at me and smiled."Good morning!" The fear in her eyes last night was gone. Now that I've woken up and the nurse made sure I'd be fine, she looked less stressed and more like my mom again.
I smiled. "Good morning." I stretched a bit looking for a glass of water and my mom stood up quickly.
"Don't move, sweetie. Your broken rib will require you not to move for a while." She passed me the glass and I thanked her. "Miranda called this morning and I told her you woke up last night. She's coming, with Wyatt." Mom paused and looked at the door. "And Leif had been waiting on the waiting room all night. He even slept there. I told him you woke up and that he should go to his house because you couldn't get any visits, but he stayed."
The memories of him being absent to our class because of Kendra came back to my mind.
I didn't feel sad or disappointed anymore. I cried for him for nothing. Great.Mom bit her lower lip. "He told me he was the reason you got out of school.." She stopped, expecting me to say something. What could I say? I didn't wanna see Leif.
"Did he really stay here all night long?" Mom nodded.
"He's been here since he found out about your accident. He came with Miranda and Wyatt, but he didn't want to leave with them."
"Well, um, if he wants to come, then it's fine."
Mom looked relieved. She ran towards the door and I heard Miranda whisper something while they were getting in. Miranda put her hands on her hips and gave me a huge smile.
"Look at you, completely awake and beautiful." She sat on a chair next to my bed.
She took my hand, and then started crying.
I looked over to Wyatt, who was standing behind her. He just shrugged and shot me a smile.
"I'm sorry." She wiped her tears away. "I'm just so glad you're alright. Yesterday was the worst day of my life."
"I know." I said, knowing that if this would've been the other way round, I'd be terrified.
"Ironic, isn't it? The day you decide to break the rules, quit school and not putting your seatbelt on, everything explodes in your face."
"Look at you, being a total badass." Wyatt said with a smile.
I smiled because laughing would hurt me and Miranda rolled her eyes but half smiled. "I guess I am." I wanted to clarify that I did have my seatbelt on, but I couldn't explain something I didn't understand, so I stayed quiet.
Someone knocked on the door and Miranda looked at me, bitting her lower lip.
She whispered, "He didn't leave this place since we came yesterday. He even missed his football practice."
Leif entered the room, looking really nervous.
I looked at Wyatt and Miranda. "Could you give us a minute?"
