I could feel the fear in the air. Maddie wasn't aware of the fact that I was following her home. She didn't believe in my promise of keeping her safe. That simple truth angered me. Being afraid was part of my life. My presence created fear. I was immune to the familiar bitter taste that I felt on my mouth. But Maddie's fear bothered me. I didn't like it.
I stood by her room's front door watching how she was biting her lip, she seemed to be nervous. This wasn't the way it was supposed to be. I've saved her from death. Fear wasn't a feeling she should be having to face.
"What's wrong?" I asked, her screaming instantly died when her eyes connected with mine.
"Ross." She panted, pressing her hand against her chest. I could hear her heart beat echoing in the room.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know you were so terrified about this." I walked into her room, looking at her closely while I let myself fall on her bed.
"Well, strange souls who appear in my house, touching and talking to me, do scare me a little bit." She glared at me. "And then, I ask you about it and you cuss and get all angry."
Dammit. She always came back to that. She wanted to know so much. Things I couldn't tell her. I had to keep her safe. Knowledge was dangerous. Needing to be near her, I sat beside her little bed. Her scent warmed me.
"Sorry for that. I shouldn't have scared you like that."
"Well, can you tell me what's going on, and who is she?" I shook my head, looking away. If I looked into those deep brown eyes, I knew I'd fall.
"No, that's the only thing I can't do for you. Ask me anything, Maddie, and I'll make sure it's yours, but I can't do that." She sighed.
"Why are you here, then?"
Because they're trying to fix what I did. They wouldn't leave her alone. I was Death. I could decide to let someone live. It was my choice. I made my choice. But I couldn't tell her any of that.
"Until I know everything's fine... until I handle what has to be done, I'll spend every night here in your room." I dragged my eyes back to her and fixed them on hers. I wanted her to understand that she didn't have to fear anything. "I have to protect you." I stopped and made a gesture towards her bathroom. "If you wanna take that shower, I'll make sure you're completely safe."
Relief reached her face and it quickly left, being replaced by a questioning look.
"Can you read my mind?"
She didn't want me to read her mind. Interesting.
"Not exactly. It's more like I can feel your fears so clearly that I can hear them." She looked at me for a moment, as if she remembered something that confused her.
"You heard me at the cafeteria when you were with Kendra, I wasn't scared then."
Ah, I did feel her fear that day. I enjoyed that fear. Knowing that she worried about the blonde girl flirting with me relieved the pain on my chest I felt at the sight of her cuddled up with Leif.
"You weren't?" I asked, incapable of containing my smile.
Her face turned an adorable red shade before she turned on her heels and took off, hoping I didn't catch her blushing.
I smiled to myself at how cute she was.
