The next few days were hell, students being moved in groups from place to place. Walking in uniform stature, everyone was constantly on high alert. Teachers would make us halt before each corner to check there was nothing there. Before we continued on, it was horrific. I never got to see Grace as Hagrid had promised to look after her. Meathor had been placed in the owlery to avoid notes being passed arranging meetings. I was completely shut off from most of my friends, but worse of all I was shut off from Oliver. We barely saw each other and if we did it would simply be a fleeting pass in the corridor. It drove me insane, the school couldn't go on like this. There was no way!
I was currently sat on my bed having just re-read my charms book for the third time this week. I ran my hand through my messy hair and huffed in frustration, I couldn't take it any more. Grabbing my robe I shot down stairs, pulling up the hood to avoid being caught. Sneeking out of the common room I started to head to the infirmary. I needed to talk to another girl and seeings how Ginny was nowhere to be found, the petrified Hermione would have to do. I snuck round the castle using the back hallways, that no one ever used. A loud clatter behind me made me jolt forward and I took off running to the next corner. Keeping an eye behind me I quickly shimmied round, only to hit something.
"Hey watch where your going." Ron?
"I could say the same for you." Drawing back my hood, my two friends gaped.
"Anna?" Harry asked blatantly and I rolled my eyes.
"Yes it's me, gosh guys I only didn't see you yesterday. You've already forgotten me?" I joked, standing. I brushed the dust from my robe as my fellow Gryffindor's scrambled to their feet. I noticed Harry grasping a piece of crumpled paper in his hand, it was yellowed and torn at one side.
"What's that?" I asked eying the strange article.
"It's from Hermione." Harry muttered and my eyes widened in surprise.
"Hermione? She's awake?" I could hear the hopefulness in my tone, as a grin spread on my face.
"Not exactly." I tilted my head questioningly at the duo. How could she have given something to them, but not be awake? Seeing my unspoken confusion Ron decided to "catch me up" with their days events.
"Harry found it in Hermione's hand, it was screwed up in a ball, its about the Chamber." He whispered the last bit and I gulped. Hermione had been going to look for a possible beast that could cause the petrification.
"What does it say?" My heart drummed relentlessly in my chest and my breath hitched. A sudden noise from the end of the corridor, made us jump and we all flinched away from it.
"Come on." Grabbing my hand Harry began to drag me from the hallway.
"Of the many fearsome beasts that roam our land, none is more deadly than the Basilisk. Capable of living for hundred of years, instant death awaits any who meet this giant serpents eye. Spiders flee before it." I listened silently as Harry read from the torn page, I pieced the puzzle together reluctantly reaching the same conclusion as my fellow Gryffindor's.
"This is it. The monster in the Chamber of Secrets it's a basilisk. That's why I..." he glanced at me"...can hear it speak, it's a snake!" I was slightly horrified at his childlike wonderment at figuring it out. Terrified at the thought of him going anywhere near that thing.
"But if it kills by looking people in the eyes, why is it no ones dead?" Ron scowled thinking hard, it was a valid point. How was it everyone had been petrified and not killed?
"Because no one did look it in the eye. Not directly, at least. Colin saw it through his camera. Justin..." My spectacled friend thought for a moment, scrunching his nose slightly before he came up with an idea.
