"Rose! Stop annoying Becca, now," my mum scolded Rose, who was trying to push my face into my bowl of cereal without me noticing.
What a wonderful older sister I've got.
'Rory, you almost done, bud?' I signed to her.
'Yes,' she replied.
'Well, let's get going, then, shall we?'
___________
'Rory, be careful. And have fun,' I signed.
Okay. I love you, bye! She signed back, hugging me and then running off, waving her arms wildly.
I was about to leave....when I remembered the boy.
Oh well, I thought. Remember Angie's advice.
I walked up the stairs into the school, and went out into the park. I went behind that same tree.
And there he was again.
He was wearing black skinny jeans and a Nirvana T-Shirt. He wasn't crying this time, but he was still playing his guitar.
I wanted to know him. Who was he? Why was he always alone? Why was he crying the other day?
"Um, hi."
Wow, what a wonderful way to start a conversation.
He didn't look up from his guitar. He didn't seemed to have noticed me. I tried again; he didn't respond that time either.
Next, I tapped him on the shoulder to catch his attention.
He jumped two feet into the air when I did so. For a second, he looked really shocked. Frightened, even.
Then he composed himself and seemed to recognise me from the other day when he had waved at me.
He just shyly smiled, and put down his guitar. Gosh, he was adorable when he smiled.
"Hi, I'm Rebecca," I said, smiling.
His face fell a little, and nothing came out of his mouth. Instead, he moved his hands.
'I'm mute.'
I mentally slapped myself. Of course. How could I be so stupid? How?
While I was busy mentally beating myself up, he seemed to think that I didn't know ASL. So he just sighed, and picked his guitar back up.
'No, wait,' I signed back.
He looked so surprised. Again. Then he just smiled really wide. Looks like he didn't meet a lot of people. That might've explained why he was usually so lonely.
'I'm R-E-B-E-C-C-A,' I stated, spelling out my name.
In sign language, you make up a symbol or an action for your name. But when you met someone new, you had to spell it out.
I then showed him the symbol for my name, which was using my hands to show water droplets falling down from the sky, kind of like rain.
He watched, fascinated.
I then asked him for his name.
'I'm L-U-K-E,' he replied. His symbol was that of playing an air guitar. I just chuckled. He'd probably made that when he was a kid.
'Do you know how to read?' I asked him.
'Yes,' he replied.
I took out my phone and typed something in.
'You play the guitar beautifully.'
'Thank you. No one's ever told me how my music sounds, except for my friend Calum.'
'Well, you should know. I've never heard someone play so well before, honest.'
'You should know something as well.'
'And what would that be?' I asked him, curious.
'You're beautiful.'
He handed the phone to me, smiling sheepishly, looking down.
I just smiled wide. And I was pretty sure I was blushing as well. What was going on?
'Thank you.'
He looked up at me when he read the text and smiled back, unmistakably blushing as well. He was just...
'Is Rory your sister?' He typed in.
I laughed and texted him back.
'Yeah. The other day, she kept referring to you as fairy.'
He just chuckled.
'I kept trying to tell her that my name was Luke, but she was convinced that my name was Fairy. She's adorable.'
'Luke. So what's your last name?'
'Luke Hemmings. Well, Luke Robert Hemmings, actually. What's yours?'
'Rebecca Smith. Rebecca Marie Smith. But I go by Becca.'
'Nice to meet you, then, Becca.'
'Great to meet you, too, Luke.'
