Chapter 5

"Miss Conte, this isn't fair!" I heard Keegan say. It was Monday and apparently, the cast list was posted outside the drama room. A lot of people were already there, but I stayed a few feet back. I did not want to look at the list yet.

"Keegan, it was for the best," Miss Conte said. She was standing with Keegan and Eva outside the drama room. Both of them did not look happy.

       "But we helped...." Eva began.

Miss Conte held up her hand, stopping her mid-sentence. "I know you two helped write the scripts, but that doesn't mean you would be a shoe-in for the roles. The two leads have amazing potential. You have to understand that it was for the best of the play. Besides, the two of you still have significant roles."

Kamille was watching nearby, so I walked over to her. "What has those two angry?"

"Apparently, they didn't get the leads," Kamille said. "I never looked at the list yet, but whoever got the leads might have to dig their graves. It's never good to get the roles they want."

"They didn't get the leads?" I asked. "Then who...."

Oh no. No no no. I hurried to the cast list, pushing through the crowd to see who the leads were.

       There it was.

       Jada....Kamille Barnes.

       Jacob....Munro Wilde.

"Dammit!" I hissed, moving away from the cast list. Why did I have to be cast as the lead? I couldn't play Jacob! I couldn't!

Kamille walked up to me. "So who are the leads?"

"Let's just say that we better start digging our grave," I said through my clenched teeth. To say I was pissed was an understatement.

Kamille furrowed her eyebrows. "You mean that....You and me....We're playing Jacob and Jada? But I thought my audition was terrible. I guess I thought wrong."

"And I thought Keegan would have done better than me at the audition," I said, looking at Miss Conte. She was no longer talking to Eva and Keegan, so I walked up to her. "Miss Conte, I can't play Jacob."

She furrowed her eyebrows. "What are you talking about? Yours was the best audition."

"I don't even want to be here," I said. "I'm forced to be here. I can't be the male lead."

"Munro, you have so much potential," Miss Conte said. "You were the only one I truly saw as Jacob."

I sighed, not even bothering reasoning with the eccentric teacher. I walked away, pulling out my cell phone to give my stupid brother a piece of my mind. "I hate you," I said once Laughlin picked up.

"Wow, um, okay," Laughlin said. "What did I do?"

"You got me in this stupid mess," I said. "I need to get out of the play. Now."

"Not a chance," Laughlin said. "It's either be in the play or be suspended."

"I'd rather be suspended," I said.

Laughlin snorted. "Correction. You're either in the play or in the play. Nothing else."

"Laughlin, you don't understand," I said. "I can't be in the stupid play!"

"You might not," Laughlin said. "You could be a set builder or...."

"The cast list was posted today," I interrupted. "You want to know who's playing the male lead. Me."

Laughlin laughed at that. "That's hilarious! Seriously, why are you freaking out?"

"I'm not kidding," I snapped. "You think I would kid about something as stupid as that? Get me out of the play now."

Laughlin was silent for a bit before saying, "Man, you must be really talented if you got the lead. Munro, you're not getting out of the play. You're lucky you didn't get expelled. Scorpions are dangerous."

       "I don't care if I get expelled," I said. "I. Want. Out."

"What was that?" Laughlin said. "I can't hear you. I think the phone has bad connection." And with that, he hung up.

I groaned in frustration, shoving my phone back in my pocket. Why did I have to get this stupid punishment? I would have even got a suspension for all I care. But being cast in the play as the male lead. I couldn't handle it."

Kamille walked up to me, looking concerned. "Are you okay, Munro? You look really angry."

"I'm fine," I said, honestly snapping a bit. I sighed, knowing it was rude of me to do that when she was wondering if I was okay. "Sorry. I'm just angry that I got the lead."

Kamille furrowed her eyebrows. "Really? Why?"

"It's a long story," I muttered. Okay, not that long of a story, but I couldn't explain it to anyone who didn't know my life. "Can you do me a favor and tell Miss Conte I'm going to be late for rehearsal? I'm just going to find my brother and talk to him."

Kamille nodded before I walked off towards the art room, knowing Nick would be there. Whenever I had to stay after school for detention or whatever, he was usually there. And luckily for me, he was.

Nick looked at me, eyebrows furrowed. He got up from the stool he was sitting on and walked over to me. "Don't you have rehearsals?" he asked.

"Yes, but I need a favor," I said. "I need you to join the play."

"Isn't it a bit too late for that?" Nick asked. "Besides, I'm not an actor."

"I know," I said. "I was thinking you could be a set builder. You love art and I figured you'd like building the sets. And you being there could help me keep my anger under control."

"And why would you get angry?" he asked.

I didn't know how to tell him, so I gestured for him to follow me. He grabbed his bag before following me all the way to the cast list.

"Wow," Nick said. "So you actually did get the lead. And you're angry about it?" I nodded. "Why?"

"Let's just say that the lead reminds me a lot like two people we know," I said. "Me and Laughlin."

"I don't get it," Nick said.

"The lead has a dark past," I explained. "That's how I was able to get the part so easily. When Miss Conte told me to actually try, I used the anger I had with Mom and Dad and those bullies. But actually being cast as Jacob...."

"Reminds you of the past you and Laughlin had," Nick finished. "And reliving the past makes you angry, which is why you need me in there."

I sighed and nodded. "Spot on."

"I'll do it," he said. "I'll be part of the set builders. Besides, they probably need an expert on their team."

So Munro says stupid a lot and Nick is too cocky about his art. cx How about that?
