Chapter 17
When the alarm on my phone went off, I groaned and turned it off before shoving my face back in my pillow. I couldn't really fall asleep last night because I was sleeping on the wooden floor in my room.
I insisted on letting Kamille sleep on my bed because she was the guest and we didn't have a guest room, but I couldn't sleep on the couch because almost every day at one in the morning Nick has to get some food from the kitchen, which included a bag of chips that he would eat quite loudly.
"Munro?" I heard Kamille say in a soft voice. "Was that the alarm?"
"Mhmm."
"Are you going to get up?" she asked.
"No," I murmured into my pillow.
"Okay," she said and I heard you getting up from the bed. "Don't mind me getting changed."
Yesterday, when Kamille came over, Elliot actually went through her clothes and gave Kamille the ones she didn't wear anymore. We didn't know how long Kamille was going to be staying here, but judging what she told me last night, it could be a while.
We talked a lot more last night. I didn't tell her anything else about my family, but she talked about hers. She told me her parents were rarely proud of her, no matter what she did, and at times, they ignored her. Once, Kamille even stayed in a hotel for a couple of nights. Her parents didn't notice.
I started to hear her getting changed and being the guy I was, I was very tempted to sneak a look.
I didn't. I was tempted to, but I decided to be a gentleman and not look.
It killed me inside.
When she was finished getting changed, I heard her kneel down beside me. "Are you going to get up at all?" she asked. "We have school, as well as a play rehearsal. They play is in two weeks."
"I know," I said. "I'm too tired to get up. I'll just show up after school for the rehearsal."
"How will Nick and I get to school then?" she asked. "I don't have a car."
"Do you have a driver's license?" I asked.
"Yes."
"Then drive my car," I said. "Simple. I'm going back to bed. If you're hungry, there's cereal in the bottom cupboard beside the fridge. Bowls are in the cupboard above that."
"Okay," she said. "Thanks."
She got up and left my bedroom and I tried going back to bed, but Laughlin walked into my room and kicked my leg. "Get up, lazy ass," he said.
"Fight me," I muttered.
"Oh, okay," he said. "Go ahead, tell your older brother who used to be a boxer and who is now the manager of my father-in-law's gym to fight you. See how that will happen. I'm serious, get up and get ready for school."
"I don't want to get up," I said. "I'm tired. Do you not know how hard it is falling asleep on the floor?"
"Then I'll get out one of the air mattresses for you to sleep on tonight," he said. "You're not staying home from school, so get up."
"But I never skip school," I said. "Let me do it just this once."
"No," he said. "And I'm not stupid, you've skipped before. I'm not letting you skip again."
I sat up just to look at him with raised eyebrows. "Okay, you're not letting me skip, but didn't you skip school once just to have sex with Elliot?"
"What? N....That was just once."
"And on time after you dropped me and Nick off at school, you missed first period because you were too busy making out with her in the car."
"Again, that was o...."
"And you went somewhere with her during lunch, did whatever it is you guys do, and showed up late."
"One time. That was one...."
"And you almost missed your high school graduation because you were too busy...."
"Okay, I get it," Laughlin said. "But you're still going to school."
"So if I get a girlfriend, I can skip school to make love to her?" I asked. "Is that what you're promoting, you unfair hypocrite?"
"Just get dressed," Laughlin said before leaving my bedroom, closing the door behind him.
I sighed, getting up from my make-shift bed on the floor and walking over to my dresser. I picked out some clothes and got changed before walking out of my bedroom to get something to eat.
"You look tired," Nick commented. "Why didn't you just sleep on the couch?"
"Because someone likes to get a snack at one in the morning and eats too loudly," I said.
"Don't blame me, Laughlin doesn't feed me enough at dinner," Nick said. "There was barely anything on my plate."
"Are you kidding me?" Laughlin asked. "You're the one who filled you're own plate and you ate Elizabeth's leftovers."
"It still wasn't enough," Nick said. "I'm a growing boy and I need to be fed properly."
"Then eat snack during the day, not at one in the morning," Laughlin said.
"You can't tell me what to," Nick said.
"Right," Laughlin said. "Even though I'm your legal guardian, you don't have to listen to me at all. Makes total sense."
I poured myself some cereal and milk before sitting down at the table. "I thought you were just going to sleep," Kamille said.
"I can't, Laughlin won't let me," I said. "He's a hypocrite."
"I'm not a hypocrite," Laughlin said.
"You kind of are," Nick said. "I skipped school once to go to an art gallery, and you got mad at me and grounded me. Meanwhile, you skipped just to make lo--"
"I officially have a headache," Laughlin said. "Thanks you two, forgiving me one of my many headaches."
"You're the one who's a hypocrite and started this all," I pointed out. "If I was able to sleep in, we wouldn't be having this conversation."
"You're still going to school," Laughlin said as Elliot walked out of her bedroom.
"Elliot, tell Laughlin to let me stay home," I said.
"Munro, you have to go to school," she said. "There's no reason why you should miss it unless you're sick."
"Or having sex," I said. "Right, Elliot?"
"That was one time," Elliot said.
"Yeah, and I just want to sleep in one time," I said.
"You're going to school," Laughlin said. "So hurry up with your breakfast if you don't want to be late."

Okay, from now on, I promise there shouldn't be anymore week+ long breaks between the chapters. :) I have the next three planned out, so I shouldn't take too long to write, and it will end around 30 chapters. Then Nick's book can come. I can't wait to write it because I love Todd. (For those who didn't read the Protector series bonus chapters on Nick, Todd is his roommate in university and I love him. cx)
