I pushed passed the crowd of students and rushed down to Potions. I walked in and sighed with relief seeing that I wasn't late. I stood in place next to Hermione and Slughorn began the lesson when Harry and Ron barged through the doors. "Ah. Harry, my boy, I was beginning to worry. We've brought someone with us, I see." Slughorn said gleefully apparently happy that Harry joined our class. Harry nudged Ron who looked nervous and like he didn't want to be here at all.

"Uh—Ron Weasley, sir." He said. Lavender Brown who was standing next to me and Hermione gripped her books nervously and was looking at Ron the way you would look at food after not eating for weeks. It freaked me out and Hermione was obviously annoyed with her. "I'm sorry. But I'm dead awful at Potions, a menace, actually." Ron said awkwardly and tried to turn and leave. "I'll just—" Harry pulled his sleeve so he couldn't leave.

Slughorn laughed lightly, "Nonsense, we'll sort you out. Any friend of Harry's is a friend of mine. Get your books out."

"I haven't actually got my book yet, and nor has Ron." Harry said.

"Get what you want from the cupboard," he waved them off and turned back to us clearing his throat. "Now, as I was saying, I prepared some concoctions this morning. Any ideas what these might be?" He asked gesturing to the three cauldrons. Hermione and I raised our hands right away. "Yes miss...?" He said pointing to Hermione and we lowered our hands.

"Granger," she finished his sentence. She stepped up to one of the cauldrons, "that one there is Veritaserum. It's a truth-telling serum." She went on a short rant of it. I looked to my right slightly and noticed Draco quickly looked down as if he was caught or something. I felt a pang of pain seeing how close Pansy stood next to him remembering how once that was my spot. I redirected my attention to the class realizing she was about to explain what the last one was when Slughorn cut her off.

He pointed towards me, "Y/N L/N," I said knowing he would most likely ask.

"Ah. Well Ms. L/N would you like to guess what this last one is?" He asked, I nodded and walked up to the front of the room next to Hermione.

"This is Amortentia," I started. "It's the most powerful love potion in the world. It's rumored to smell differently to each person according to what attracts them." I glanced to Draco unintentionally and I wondered what he could smell. "For example," I cleared my throat. "I smell . . . hot chocolate, and apples, and . . . butterbeer foam?" I questioned and took a deep breath, walking about to where we had been standing.

"Amortentia doesn't create actual love. That would be impossible. But it does cause a powerful infatuation or obsession. And for that reason it is probably the most dangerous potion in this room." Slughorn explained and put a lid on the cauldron and the faints scents I smelled earlier faded and my mind cleared.

"Professor you haven't told us what that is," I said pointing to the small tear drop shaped vial.

"What you see before you, ladies and gentlemen, is a curious little potion known as Felix Felicis. But it is more commonly referred to as—"

"Liquid luck," Me and Hermione said in unison.

"Yes, Miss Granger, Miss L/N. Liquid Luck." He bobbed his head. "Desperately tricky to make, disastrous should you get it wrong. One sip and you will find that all of your endeavors succeed." He said. My eyes lit up, thinking of the mission I had almost forgotten. "At least until the effects wear off." He said putting the vial back in its stand. "This is what I offer each of you today." With that one sentence the very air of the room changed, I needed to get that potion I thought. "One tiny vial of liquid luck to the student who, in the hour that remains manages to brew an acceptable Draught of the Living Death. The recipes for which can be found on page 10 of your books," he said and I quickly flipped through my book to that very page reading it over. I was fairly good at brewing potions this should be easy for me. "I should point out, however, only once did a student manage to brew a potion of sufficient quality to claim this prize." With that, I was even more determined to be the second student to claim it. "Nevertheless, good luck to you all. Let the brewing commence." And with that everyone went to grabbing ingredients and claimed empty stations. Preparing the ingredients was horrid and difficult how did he expect us to make this within an hour?

I looked over at Harry's work area, "How did you do that?"

"Crush it," he said looking down at his old tattered book.

"No the instructions specifically say to cut." Hermione said in confusion we looked at each other's book at it clearly says to cut it.

"No, really." He said. I looked at my cauldron then back at my book distraught. Hermione huffed in frustration and fixed her puffy hair back. I tightened my ponytail and looked up at the clock, just barely forty minutes left to get this right.

Slughorn was making rounds, he stopped at mine and I felt my stomach churn. This was the best I could get it, no matter what I did it always ended up ruined. He threw a tiny leaf into my cauldron and the potion boiled over the edges. I could tell from the look on his face that's not what it was supposed to do at all. "Well, Ms. L/N you are a brilliant student but there is definitely room to improve," He cleared his throat and moved on to Harry's cauldron which was the last one. He threw a tiny leaf into the cauldron and the surface stayed still and burned the leaf up. "Merlin's beard this is perfect!" Slughorn exclaimed. Hermione looked at me exchanging a look of slight irritation then looked up holding her head high with a forced smile. "So perfect I daresay one drop would kill us all." Slughorn looked at Harry with a proud smile.

I blew at the top of my bangs frustrated with my arms crossed watching Slughorn presenting Harry the Felix Felicis. I would've been okay if it had been Hermione who beat me to it, but I'm the best in Slytherin house at potions how was I beaten by Harry? "So there we are as promised," Slughorn took the potion off it small stand and showed it around to the rest of the class. "One vial of Felix Felicis," He said. Harry looking slightly impatient reached out to grab it but Slughorn pulled it away like how you taunt a little kid with a toy they want. "Congratulations," He said then handed it over to Harry who looked way too pleased with himself. "Use it well," Slughorn concluded then began clapping. Everyone slowly clapped unenthusiastically, all sore that they didn't get it.

I sat around scribbling furiously into my notebook while Hermione slammed several books onto the table that were so thick I didn't know how on earth she'd finish reading all of them before they were due. "There has to be something in here!" She whisper shouted.

"Maybe there was a mistake on this issue of the textbook," I said.

"Or maybe Harry is just better at potions than you guys are?" Ron suggested and we both sent him a chilling glare.

"Harry is great at many things," I started.

"But when it comes to potions," Hermione continued. "Or any subject for that matter."

"We are better," We said in unison. We both were the top of our houses it wasn't seemingly possible for Harry to be better than us.

"This is wracking my brain," Hermione groaned in frustration. I was about to say something when I felt a sharp pain on my forearm and I let out a yelp. "Y/N are you ok?" Hermione and Ron's face were stricken with fear.

"Its fine," I said squeezing my arm tightly trying to numb it.

"What's on your arm?" Ron asked.

"Nothing," I said defensively.

"Is it a cut? Or a bruise, here let me see maybe I can help," Hermione reached out to pull up my sleeve.

"No!" I stood up still holding tightly to my forearm. "I mean its fine. . ."

"You don't look okay, mate," Ron said exchanging looks with Hermione.

"It's nothing, I—I need to go," I said, leaving the library and made my way to the sixth floor since it was usually quiet and people weren't around much. I pulled up my sleeve revealing the dark mark on my arm. It has been throbbing and aching over the last few days, I had a pretty good idea why. I watched the giant circular bird cage as two birds chirped and flew about. Soon the pain sort of eased away and it was gone. I pulled my sleeve back down buttoning the cuff. I turned to walk down the hall when I bumped into a dark figure.

"Watch you're going," The voice hissed. I looked up to apologize, but it seemed as we were both at a loss of words when our eyes locked. "What are you doing up here?"
