When Noah stalked out of your cabin after what was to you a minor argument, you couldn't believe it. You had only been married a few months and it was your first fight. Noah was normally so patient as you learned all the things you needed to know to live with him in the bush.
"Noah, honey I can't help you with the hauling today." You smiled as you laid your head on his shoulder and stroked his wispy beard. Noah pulled back with a jerk and his blue eyes locked onto yours.
"What do you mean?" He shook his head at you with a slight frown and your happy smile seemed to upset him a little.
"Well..." You began, your smile faltering under his gaze. "I know you wanted me to help you haul those last logs from the beach to the cabin, but I - ""Fine." Noah cut you off and the word sliced through your heart like a knife.
"But honey, I need to tell you -" You tried again to explain why you couldn't help but he angrily cut you off again."I said it was fine. I was counting on you to help me today but if you can't, then you can't. It's fine."
Noah pulled on his long black coat and grabbed his cane from where it leaned against the wall. Before you could gather your mind to say anything in response, he had yanked open the cabin door and walked out.
It was the first time you had seen Noah that angry and you were taken aback by how quickly everything had escalated. It also broke your heart that he didn't stay and talk with you about it, he just left. You knew he was counting on you to help him finish the heavy work today. But he had to know that you wouldn't just abandon him with all that work to be done if you didn't have a good reason.
You finished dressing slowly, trying to think of what you would say to Noah when you found him. Closing the heavy wooden door slowly behind you, the cool nip in the morning air made you hug your jacket closer around you. Clumping heavily in your sturdy work boots, you trudged across the camp and up the stairs to the main cabin. Pushing open the door, the warmth and the smell of breakfast cooking met you with a wonderful familiarity. Brown Town had started to feel like home.
Noah turned from the stairs and looked at you. His expression was serious and there was no trace of his usual smile. The ache in your heart started again and you moved toward him but he turned away and walked up the stairs. He was your soulmate. Couldn't he see how he was hurting you with his silence?
You wanted to turn around and run from the cabin and not stop running until your heart stopped aching. But you loved him too much to let this distance stay between you. Changing course, you walked to the kitchen area and began pulling the breakfast dishes down from the cabinet. Soon, the whole family had gathered in the kitchen and main room to finish getting breakfast ready and to set the table.
You sat down in your normal place and motioned for Noah to sit beside you. There was one dismaying moment when you thought he wouldn't sit by you. He hesitated and your eyes widened when you thought he might sit away from you. When he finally settled into the space next to you, but still not looking at you, you impulsively grabbed his arm and leaned over, kissing him quickly on the cheek. You saw his brow twitch slightly in a frown and you pulled back, hurt and embarrassed.
You glanced quickly up to see if anyone else in the family had seen what had happened and your eyes met your mother-in-law Ami's eyes. She held your gaze for a couple of seconds with a faint smile. Your smile back at her was just as faint and you gave your head a minute shake and then dropped your eyes down to your plate.
"So, Noah." Ami spoke across the table. "What do you two have planned for today?"
Noah looked directly at you and lifted one eyebrow. "I had planned for us to finish moving the last of the logs today, but it looks like that won't be accomplished."His look at you was meant to shame you and you couldn't believe he was being so petty about this. He could enlist any of his brothers to help him and his behavior about this was starting to make you really angry. Before you could turn your head and say something sharp and biting in reply, Ami spoke again.
"But Noah, a woman who is expecting a baby can't do that kind of heavy lifting."The laughing and talking that had filled the room seconds before suddenly cut off like someone had thrown a switch. Noah jerked his head up to look at his mother and then his head swung back to look at you. Completely annoyed at his unwarranted anger, all you wanted to do in that moment was stick out your tongue at him and say, 'I told you I had a good reason!'. So you did. Pulling your tongue back into your mouth, you pinched his arm through his white shirt.
"I tried to tell you I had a good reason, Noah Brown. And maybe next time you'll hang around long enough to hear me out!"
Noah's cheeks went from pink to red then to ashen white as the news that he was going to be a father finally sunk in.
"I'm so sorry, my dear. I was such an ass." At gentle Noah's description of himself as an 'ass' the room exploded with laughter and he pulled you to him and kissed you deeply."No, you're not an ass, Noah." You smiled around his kiss.
"Yes, I was. I was so busy thinking about getting the cabin ready for our family that I forgot to think about you. So from now until our baby arrives, you will relax and keep him safe and if there is anything you need, I will be your willing and humble servant.""Anything?" You asked with lifted brows.
"Anything." Noah replied.
As you began pushing your husband out of his seat, out of the door and down the steps, leading him back to your cabin, Ami waved her hands at her perplexed family."Everybody keep eating. They're not coming back anytime soon."
