When you pushed aside the flap on Noah's tent and called his name, the last thing you expected to see was another woman in his arms.
"Surprise!" You couldn't believe how calm you were. You tossed your backpack on the ground and stood facing him and waiting to hear what he had to say. The young woman looked from you back to Noah and then removing her arms from around his neck, she stepped back and dropped her hands to her side.
"What are you doing here?" Noah asked gently but with a distance to his voice that felt like a knife in your heart. It was so different from the last time you had been together. Then, Noah had been trying not to cry as he begged you to stay and not move away. You had thought you were making the right decision at the time but once you got to Anchorage, all you could think about was Noah and the life with him you had thrown away. You hadn't been able to concentrate on your studies and your nights were spent staring at his picture and hating yourself for hurting him the way you did.
"I missed you so much." You answered honestly even though you knew it was too late. "I thought we could talk." Why did you keep on with words that no longer mattered? It was clear he had moved on. But you had come so far; you had to at least try. "Can we talk?"
"Yes. But let me talk first." Noah held his hand out to you and your heart pounded as you thought he was going to come to you and hold you, but he only led you to the small chair next to the door and as you sat, he kneeled in front of you. "This is my fiancée." He gestured his hand to the beautiful young girl who stood quietly, watching. You looked at the woman who would become Noah's wife and you wanted to scream at her to get away from him and leave the two of you alone, but you already knew there was nothing you could say. Noah stood up and went to stand by his fiancée and slipped his arm intimately around her. Your insides twisted as you saw him hold her the way you dreamed he would one day hold you.
"So." You pushed yourself up heavily from the chair and grabbed up your backpack, slinging it over your shoulder. "So, this is your soulmate?" You didn't know why you asked that question. Why did you want to torture yourself anymore that you already had?
"Yes, she is." Noah's smile was so gentle that for a wild moment you thought maybe the door to his heart had opened and he had changed his mind. That he realized you really were the one for him and he would fly into your arms and tell you that he loved you. But his next words slammed the door shut. "She is the one I was looking for. She has never hurt me and I will never hurt her."
You took one last look into Noah's eyes and let out a sigh so deep that you felt it all the way down to your soul.
"Be happy." You sincerely meant that even though it crushed your soul to say the words.
"We are." Noah tightened his arm around the waist of his chosen one, his soulmate.
You walked slowly out of the tent and toward the path leading to the beach. Your heart hurt for what you had lost, for what you had thrown away. But Noah was happy. And that was all that mattered.
