Chapter Fifteen
Gwin was stood in the dinner line when Luka came up beside her. She smiled at him and he returned it, she knew she was meant to be sitting with Julian but she didn’t know everyone else was joining.
“Hi!” He beamed at her. Though, she had to admit his smile was defiantly worth looking at. He had perfect white teeth and his cologne was so mouth wateringly good she could have melted. Her legs went from underneath her and he reached out just in time to catch her tray and her arm. Her mouth dropped open as she looked from the tray to him and back again.
“Close one,” He winked. She looked at him and narrowed her gaze, he was cheeky that was obvious. Perhaps more so than Julian had been the first time they had spoken. “I have good reflexes but I didn’t this morning, I had really bad ones. You see that girl over there,” He nodded towards Lisa, she was a skinny cheerleader but that girl knew how to hold her ale. “She out drunk me, the effects hit me like a car this morning. Can you imagine that Gwin, a car slamming into your head.”
“Well,” Gwin smirked. “Perhaps that means that women are less affected by the consumption of alcohol.”
“Oh,” He rubbed his chin and she giggled to herself. “Kick a guy when he’s down huh?” He walked beside her as she paid for her lunch and walked towards the table that Julian and the others were sitting at. She noticed that Charlotte, Amanda and Quinn were back with two new boys. She thought they were called Peter and Jake though she wasn’t sure which way around it was. She would have been thrilled to see them except they were sat on table with the Count Sister’s and the Master Brother’s; this was going to be awkward.
“When did they get back?” Gwin practically squealed it. She didn’t know whether to apologize on behalf of her friends intruding or be alright with it.
“Just now I think,” He laughed as he pushed her with more force towards the table. She was stalling. She hadn’t told Amanda or Charlotte that Julian and she were, well, starting something was a weird way to explain. She didn’t really know what they were. “Quit stalling, and get your ass moving woman.”
“Kick a girl when she’s down then…” He laughed as Gwin tried to stall even longer.
Aubrey had been quiet since the accident and she knew Cyrus was catching on. She had been avoiding his calls even him; at one point she had even hidden in the boys toilets while Cyrus had walked by. He leaned forward and whispered in her ear so the others couldn’t hear, although they surely would be able too. “Aubrey, what are you hiding from me?” She couldn’t tell him, her gaze lifted and settled on Julian and then Lamia. She’d told Lamia everything and she had been angry that Aubrey kept her plan a secret and that she had put herself in so much danger.
Thinking was never her strong point, acting was and that was the best plan she had come up with. She looked over at Quinn who had her head rested on her arms. Her were eyes closed as she rested on the table and Aubrey knew that was because the sun had drained her. She hadn’t had any blood and that was because Aubrey never gave it her. She was getting weaker by the day and she couldn’t help but worry.
Their table was fuller than normal and in a way it was good to have the brothers back at such a close range, especially Cyrus and Julian. She felt safe around them. Even though she wasn’t talking to Cyrus, she felt safer the closer his body was to her. Armanthia managed to break the attention that had somehow focused on her. “That idiot keeps winking at me,” She nodded behind her and everyone turned to look; even Gwin’s friends. They seemed nice enough, funny at times even. They all looked at Brett, a jock that was too dumb to register noise. “Hey, don’t you like him?” She asked Charlotte.
“No,” She said it all too quickly that everyone couldn’t help smiling; apart from Aubrey. “I mean, yeah but, it’s not like I love him or anything.”
“She does,” Amanda insisted as she leant against Peter. They were obviously an item, they looked cute together, and they matched somehow. Aubrey would give anything to have that kind of love. The one she had for Cyrus was real but they could never have the human kind, the one where they grow old together and watch their children grow. No, they would have to watch their children grow slowly to the age of eighteen when they will begin to die. Whether the death would come through the wind carrying another dangerous disease or would be hunted and killed; was still a saddening future. It was a depressing thought and Aubrey resisted the urge to wipe a tear away from her eye.
Cyrus was sensing her pain; he kissed her on the forehead and leant there for a while before whispering once more. “I love you.” Those words defiantly made her smile. She relaxed against him and looked at Julian, as Cyrus’ arms wrapped around hers.
Gwin soon joined the table, she stood there for a while hovering over it. She couldn’t help it, her eyes wondered to the free seat next to Julian, but there was a free space beside Charlotte; it couldn’t get more awkward. Luka passed her, placed his tray beside Charlottes and sat down. He gave her a sly grin before eating his meat. She rolled her eyes at him and went beside Julian; he budged to one side as she sat down and turned to smile at her. “Hey, we was wondering where you’d gone.”
“You mean you were wondering,” Armanthia insisted. She knew Armanthia didn’t like her; it didn’t take a genius to figure that out. “I was only hoping she had gotten lost.”
Luka smacked her around the head. It wasn’t a hard slap but it made Armanthia curse. “Did that hurt?” He gasped.
“Yes.” Armanthia gritted her teeth as she looked at him.
“Oh good,” He smiled “I was hoping it did.”
“Are you alright?” Jake asked.
Oh Gwin knew that look; she saw it in Cyrus every time he looked at Bree. He had fallen for Armanthia, Gwin could see why. When getting passed her tough exterior she was actually really pretty, her long hair always had a shine that matched beautifully with her brown eyes. Her smile was a poison for men, just like a voice of a siren was.
Yet, the mockery coming from Luka was enough to cut the tension with a knife. “Yes Army,” Luka laughed. “Are you alright?”
Gwin ignored them as Dimitri and Isaac soon joined in the argument, Gwin looked at Aubrey and smiled. “Have you heard?” She asked. Aubrey studied her for a while before shaking her head. She was watching her intensely, too intensely for Gwin’s liking. She turned to look at Lamia and Julian, to forget the piercing stare that was coming opposite her. “My foster care worker, Mike, he was arrested earlier today.” Lamia stopped eating and listened closely, but that wasn’t what caught Gwin’s attention. What caught her attention was Julian’s shifting eyes that seem to rest on Aubrey. She turned to look and saw Aubrey’s shift in attitude. She looked petrified, frozen. She continued speaking but never lifted her eyes from Aubrey. “Yeah, he was caught sexually assaulting a teenage girl from our academy.”
“Good!” Cyrus spat as he took his arm from around Aubrey. “I hope he rots, though what a young girl was doing at his place is beyond me. She must have been completely stupid; either that or desperate...”
Aubrey shot up from her seat. Gwin’s eyes widened she wasn’t expecting that kind of reaction. “Excuse me.” She smiled and walked off without even looking around once. Julian was watching after her but it was Lamia who got up and followed her sister.
