Chapter Fourteen

Aubrey was still rubbing her arms as Julian pulled up outside the school entrance. Blackheart was quiet because most students were still in the session before lunch break. He turned off the ignition as an unwelcomed silence drifted between them.

The police had shown up a minute before because a neighbor, who had been worried for a while, had heard Aubrey’s piecing screams. Mike had gotten arrested once Julian had shown him the evidence needed, but that didn’t stop him threatening to get what he wanted from Aubrey before he left.

He turned in his seat, as a tear fell from Aubrey’s eyes. Her body was guarded. She was sat straight with one hand caressing her left arm where he had held her down. She had red marks on her neck where he had tried biting her, and marks on her face where he had pushed her down. It wasn’t as obvious to Julian as the marks on her arms. The anger he had for that man was stronger than before. “Aubrey?”

She looked at him once as more tears fell, before getting out the car and walking towards the entrance. He soon caught up as he locked his car and shoved them in his jacket. He didn’t have to worry about the cameras; the police had taken them and the bat though they said he had acted in self defense and so wasn’t going to charge him. However, they were interested into how he got in through the window, but they didn’t push the matter because Aubrey had been in a state.

“Bree wait”

“Why?” She cried out. It hurt Julian to hear her like this, see her in this state. He knew he shouldn’t have let her do this; she’d been through this once before only Julian hadn’t been there to save her. She never told anyone else about it, only Julian. Not even Cyrus knew because she thought he would be ashamed of her, think she was dirty. Julian knew his brother wouldn’t think that way, but he never said anything. “Why is it when I try to do good it turns bad? Go on say it!”

“Say what?” He felt so much pain so much sadness, that his heart wept blood like her eyes wept sliver beads.

“I told you so…” She whimpered as he reached out for her. He wanted to hold her, it was too hard not to embrace her and calm her down. “Say it!” It was a scream this time. He knew she wanted scolding for her stupid behaviour, once again, but he wasn’t going to honor it. Although stupid, she had done a very honorable thing, and in reward of her bravery had saved Gwin.

“You remember when you climbed that tree?” He smiled as he looked into her green eyes, her beautiful and enchanting eyes. “I told you, you would fall. I told you so,” She hiccupped a sob. “You stopped him, he’s gone. What he did is unforgivable,” As a shiver coursed over her small figure he pulled off his jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders, rubbing them lightly. “But I caught you, and you knew I would even when I didn’t. So this time, I didn’t tell you…you told me.”

She smiled at him and he returned it. It reminded him of when she was only a child, five in human years and he had smiled because of her kind and caring nature. There was something about Aubrey that made you shine like stars. In a dark room only she could light it up, not even a bulb at full power could shine as bright as she did; and that had been something he fell for. She brought him from darkness and lit a path to Gwin, now it was time for him to change that. Be there for her. He pulled her into his arms and kissed the top of her head as she relaxed against him, and clung tightly to his shirt.
