Chapter Twenty-Two
Aubrey didn’t know how she was alive only that she heard voices in her head. Well, what she thought was her head. She felt a tight pressure against her chest and then breath being blown into her mouth. Luka. He was giving her CPR. She wished she could tell him that he was making her breathing worse but she knew deep down she needed that extra strength.
“You touch her and I’ll snap your head clean off your shoulders pup.” That must have been Julian, it sounded like him. But he defiantly wasn’t talking about her; he was too far away from her body.
She felt her finger twitch and realized she was waking up. How, she didn’t know. All she knew was that someone was in danger, and her best bet was Gwin. “Meow granddad, you should really think about how you talk to me. I always get what I want…”
She felt the pressure release of her chest and Luka leaned in close to her ear. “Aubrey…how the hell are you still alive?” Honestly, she had no idea. She could only guess it was her vampire side that was still fighting, all she needed was a few drops of human blood and she would heal again. And Aubrey knew just where to get it.
“Get off me!” Julian screamed.
“No!” Cyrus bellowed back. “If I let you go, she’ll kill her there and then!” Cyrus. She had felt his kiss, his pain. He had wanted her back so badly and she wanted nothing more than to open her eyes and hug him straight away; but Gwin needed her more and by the sounds of it the outsider had what Aubrey wanted.
“Cyrus…?” Luka had left her side now and was moving away from her. “You need to see this…”
“Not right now…” The tension that was flying was too intense and Aubrey slowly, but surely clenched her fists and opened her eyes.
“Just one little taste…”
“No!”
She flung herself up into the air and ran straight forward. She hadn’t really known where everyone was positioned so she made a straight line for Gwin’s scream; knocking Cyrus and Julian to the floor as she did.
As she reached the vampire she smacked her clean into the air, and swung Gwin behind her. The blood was intoxicating but she felt the human side of her now, she was fighting the urge to not sink her own teeth into Gwin’s torn flesh.
The woman hissed at her and stood with her legs apart. Aubrey knew she was ready to tear her head off but she wasn’t bothered. She focused entirely on the stranger and the stranger alone.
“Aubrey?” Cyrus cried. The cry was not normal for a man and it ripped at her heart when she heard it escape his lips.
“Did no one ever tell you?” Aubrey’s voice sounded deeper, and a lot sexier. She knew then that her vampire side; the animalistic and untamed side was trying to overpower her human half. Not only was she battling outside her body but also inside and the constant smell of Gwin’s blood made it harder. “The Count Sister’s don’t share well with others.”
“Wrong move weakling” She saw her shift even before her foot left the ground. So it wasn’t a surprise when the stranger ran at her. Aubrey pushed off the floor and flipped into the air. While she was over the vampire’s body she grabbed onto the woman’s head, twisted, and dropped to the floor behind her. She looked down and the lifeless, and motionless head in her hands. She was dead.
It quickly dissolved into dust and she wiped her hands together. “I beg to differ…” Something sparked in Gwin, a twinge of fear or joy. She wasn’t sure but Aubrey wasn’t Aubrey anymore. She didn’t feel in control and before she knew it her own teeth were sinking into the same hole the rouge vampire had created.
“Aubrey!” Julian screamed. “Aubrey stop! You are killing her!”
Someone was prying at her arms. No two people. Two others were trying to drag Gwin away but no matter what Aubrey couldn’t will herself to move.
“Aubrey!” Quinn. Images flashed into Aubrey’s mind. Her little sister. Her family. Images flashed and she had no control, she couldn’t make them stop. Her body was ripped away from Gwin’s neck and she felt her skin tear as her teeth were pulled away.
Her pupils shrunk and Aubrey had just enough strength to push her vampire side away and realize what she had just done. She looked down and Gwin’s quivering form. She had lost too much blood; she could hear her heart rate slowing. “Gwin?” Aubrey’s normal voice was back but she didn’t feel like herself. She touched a hand to her mouth, and wiped at the moisture. As soon as she looked down, she saw the smudged blood on her sweaty palms and gasped a cry. “What have I done?” She stood away from them all. Scanning the area she noticed her sisters; Lamia first, then Quinn and Armanthia. The brothers, Cyrus, and finally Julian. He looked at her horrified and then her eyes rested back onto Gwin. “What am I?” She whispered. She looked at her hands. “I’m…I’m sorry.” She turned on her heels and ran as fast as she could manage into the woods below.
