Chapter Twenty-Eight

Aubrey swung the door open and marched into her house. She saw her father a second before he held her tightly in his arms. She didn’t hug him back; it was his fault they were in this mess. She loved her father, more than words could possibly describe but if he hadn’t sunk deep into his obsession with blood, this all would have been avoided. He pulled back and his body tensed. She turned and saw what he was staring at; the Master Brothers. They were all here now, and the last time her father had seen them was when all had to flee his kingdom; and he had warned them and their father never to return. They had done it anyway, and her father looked ready to pounce.

“What the hell are they doing in my house?” He roared. He lifted his hands out at them but Aubrey slapped them down. He looked at her wounded, she didn’t care. She never understood this foolish feud, and frankly she didn’t want to know. Her father was a powerful man, he was the longest living vampire aside from his creator, who was only known as; the first. Her father had the gift of reactive adaption, or in some cases it was known as evolution. Once he was inflicted with a certain injury he was able to fight the venom or wound and eventually bring out immunity so he no longer became weak to that method again. He was the only vampire to have this gift and therefore the hardest vampire to kill. In the end, her father had done something brave; he had killed his creator because the first had threatened the life of his prodigy; The Master.

That was why Aubrey didn’t understand the feud; The Master was created by Vladimir and although the Master had supposedly caused Santorium, their old kingdom, to fall they were still connected. They were still brothers. Friends. Allies.

The brothers sulked away from his power when he roared out that question, Isaac and Dimitri actually whimpered. “Leave,” He demanded. “Before I make you…”

“No.” Aubrey demanded. “They are staying, Believe it or not father but we have more important matters to deal with.”

Cyrus came around them all with Gwin in his arms. She was still shaking but they were becoming more violent and blood was beginning to ooze out of her nose and mouth. “What in the hell happened?” Her father demanded. Cyrus began to walk towards the sofa but Vladimir stepped in front of him. Aubrey followed cautiously waiting for her father to flip out on her mate but he didn’t instead he reached out his arms and nodded to Cyrus. He hesitated at first, but when he looked at Aubrey she gave the approval needed and he handed Gwin’s shaking body into her father’s arms. He walked over the other longest sofa and sat down cradling her body. He began to wipe the blood off her skin with his long black sleeve ad then pushed strands of hair away from her face. “She smells like us…” He added, more quietly this time. “Did she have to change because of me?” That question was filled with so much guilt that Aubrey ran to him and knelt in front of his knees, she placed her hands gently on them.

“No father,” She spoke. “It happened because of me.” He looked up at that and furrowed his eyebrows, pleading her to continue. “We were in a car accident and I was wounded, my human half died for a couple of minutes and while I was out a rogue vampire attacked Gwin, I saved her but my vampire self took over…I didn’t mean it to go that far but once I tasted…tasted the…her…” Aubrey’s eyes leaked with silver and for a while she saw nothing.
