I shuffle in my boots and turn the promise ring on my finger. Rikki and the rest of them band left of tour shortly after Andy moved away, Rikki had promised to wed me one day and for now I have a ring sitting on my right hand. It's about a year since Andy left, a year since I nearly killed CC, a year since my neck injury. I had returned to rugby at the ten month mark and it was like nothing had changed, I got called up to play for team USA in the upcoming Woman's Rugby World Cup in about a year's time. Six mouths of training, six mouths off, three mouths of training, to the World Cup. Training is in none other than just outside of Fort Payne, Alabama. I had to move back to the same state as my father but Andy is here to. Luca had moved with him back to Alabama and we're living in his grandparents' old house that was left to him.
It's October of '88, I pull the team USA jacket over my hands, I adjust the Yankees cap, straighten my now pure black hair that still hangs to my mid-back, finally I look back at Luca.
"You ready?" I wonder and he smiles.
"To see Andy? Hell yeah."
I reach up and knock on the door, nobody comes for a minute and I almost given up hope completely.
"Are you sure we have the right address?" Luca wonders.
"Of course we do! I took it right out of the phone book." I state as the door opens.
I turn to face the door and I see Andy. All 5'2" of brown hair that hangs to her shoulders and blue/grey eyes. I smile.
"I'm looking for the beautiful young lady that left her older sister in the hospital." I smirk and she lights up.
"It's really you!" Andy smiles.
"All five and a half feet of sass and ass." Luca laughs from behind me.
"Lissa! Luca!" Andy hugs us tightly before inviting us inside.
We round the kitchen table and drink and catch up.
"How's the neck?" Andy wonders and I shrug.
"Good enough to get drafted to team USA." I admit and she looks the jacket over again.
"So this is real?" She smiles and I nod.
"It's what brings me back to Bama." I smile. "Training."
"Rikki put a ring on it yet?" Andy teases me and I smile.
"I gotta promise." I show her the promise ring.
It's a sliver band with a diamond on it. Engraved in the back is R+L. I take off he ring so she can see it.
"It's definitely you." Andy smiles. "What about you, Luca? Get any ass lately?" Luca laughs.
"I had a boyfriend for a couple of months but we didn't see eye to eye. He wanted to do it in his car in the mall parking lot, during shopping hours I may add. I said no I wasn't Liss." I flip him off. "Then I said no that'd be stick, on stick, on stick. He drives a manual."
"How's the boys?" She wonders.
"Good, they love tour." I smile. "Bret likes all the women."
"And CC?" She asks quietly.
"He's a mess." Luca admits. "Drugs, alcohol, the works. Liss kicked his ass though, win the neck brace on."
"You what?" Andy laughs.
"I was pissed on what he did to you. Rikki kept him away for about a week after my surgery. First time I saw him, dropped him in the middle of the bar." I say proudly and she claps.
"Same old Lissa." She smiles.
"Honey, I've missed you so much." I say hugging her again.
"I missed you to. I didn't want to leave you but--" Andy looks ready to cry and I hug her tightly.
"I know, honey. I know." I try to calm her down.
Later that night, after drinking with Andy, I'm in my room of Luca's and my house. I pick up the phone and dial Rikki's number.
"Hey baby, I miss you." He tells me and I smile.
"I miss you to. We found her." I admit.
"How's she doing?" Rikki wonders.
"Better than I thought. She's coaching at the high school." I explains.
"Was she happy to see you?" He asks.
"Beyond it." I smile. "She misses you guys."
"What about CC?" Rikki asks about his friend.
"I'm not sure, we didn't talk about him a lot." I admit. "How was the show?"
"Good, would've been better if you were here. I miss you." I hear the sadness in his voice.
"I miss you to. When will you be able to fly in again?" I wonder.
"There's only a month and a half left on tour. Then I can bounce between Bama and LA while you're there." Rikki tells me and I sigh.
"I can't wait." I admit and he laughs.
"Neither can I. I miss seeing you everyday." He admits. "You should get some sleep."
"Okay." I sigh. "I love you Rikki Rockett."
"I love you Alyssa Rockett." I can hear his smirk through the phone. "Sweet dreams, baby."
"Goodnight, babe." I say as the phone disconnects.
