"Look at all this life, oh bearer of mine. There is so much left to burn."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After we loaded our weapons into our car, we headed into central New Jersey.
It's said that after The Machines started to rebel, their safe haven was Jersey, but from what I've heard, Jersey is crazy.
"Most of the assassins there are either drunk, high, or half friggin' dead," Theo informed me as our 10 hour long trip came to an end.
"Why are they like that?" I asked.
Theo looked at me with grim eyes, "They've seen some horrible things. Can't blame 'em for lagging around like bums. I can't even think about half the things they've gone through--"
"What about us? We've gone through a lot of stuff too," I complained.
"Jersey has hell hounds, Rae." Theo spoke loudly, "Do you know what those are?"
"I've heard myths, but..."
"Hell Hounds are killer dogs that have been bread to kill ever since they were pups. They will chew your throat out like a chew toy as soon as their master snaps their fingers,"
"Why don't I have one?" I complained.
I could feel everyone roll their eyes at my question.
"'Cause if you were ever allowed to have one, you would probably have ordered it to slaughter every one of us when you were affected by the RED." Brianne said.
I couldn't exactly disagree with her. But instead of complying, I just rolled my eyes and scoffed.
"But I'm fine now." I insisted, "How can you get one?" I asked.
I was only met with silence and awkward shuffling.
"Fine then!" I exclaimed, " I'll just find out how to get one myself!"
I looked up to the sun, the hot ball of hell burning down on us as if Satan was about to be fasted down.
"Why the hell is it so hot?" I asked.
"That's a sign that we're getting closer to the Machines." Theo explained.
Just as I was about to open my mouth, the out scary looking robot with a red light in its chest came merging out from the corner of a building. It spoke in a deadly voice, "You think you can just come here, to our home and threaten us? Think again humans," he spat out the word as if it tasted sour against his taste buds. If he even had any.
A powerful beam of white light flashed before my eyes, and before I knew what happened, I saw Christopher lying on the ground, his head half blown out. Blood pooling through his clothes.
I looked over at Theodore, knowing that he was the only family he had. Theo opened his mouth to scream out Christopher's name, but before he could even utter the first letters, a white beam of hot light flashed, temporarily blinding me and Theo dropped as well. His stomach blown to bits, intestines dropping out and blood flowing as if it were a river.
"Run!" I screamed.
Jessie, Jaxon, Brianne and Alex followed my orders as they sprinted alongside me, trying to escape the wrath of The Machines.
"We're not gonna make it!" Brianne shouted.
"Not with that attitude," I screamed back.
I heard a blood curdling scream before I saw Brianne drop from the corner of my eye. I couldn't get myself to look back.
I felt the tears streaming down my face and screamed again, "Run faster!" Even though I was the one who was slowing down.
I could feel myself starting to hyperventilate. Two more white flashes and Jaxon and Jessie were down. I tripped over my own feet and hit the pavement hard, scraping my hands as I slid painfully along the concrete.
As I peeked into a window, I saw people in lab coat bustling to accomplish something.
I saw one young man speak, the youngest in particular. I could only make out a few words that he said, "Lucian, you must hurry--" but that's all I could make out as everything turned black. A hot flash of pain before I knew that this time, I wasn't waking up.
And just to be clear, yes, everyone in this book pretty much dies, they're all dead, gone. Holy shit, I just pulled a John Green. so yeah.
