Chapter FiveRashed smiled at me and I blushed like a school girl.
"I know that Jared, Bran, and Land found you but I don't know the story before that. How about we start there?" He suggested.
I went ridged in my seat. I wasn't about to tell him about being adopted by a coven of vampires or falling in love with one. Or that I was carrying a hybrid child. For some reason I don't think Rashed would like that very much. I wanted to stay on his good side for as long as possible. So I lied and left some parts out.
"My parents are both Shifters. They left each other because of differences. I went with my mother, who moved to Arizona." Rashed made a face at that. Guess he didn't like the state. "She remarried a human, didn't tell him about what she was, I moved to Spokane, Washington to be with my father. More space to run around. A shifter who I thought was my friend killed both of my parents and tried to kill me but someone killed him first. And now I'm here." Guess I didn't really lie to him. Yet.
He leaned forward. "May I ask who the father is? I don't smell his scent on you." He gestured to my stomach. I hardly hesitated.
"The person who killed my parents. . . well I was in a relationship with him and one thing lead to another. . .you know how it goes." I bit my lip then continued. "I didn't have anyone left so I decided to drive and I broke down here. I had no clue this place existed. To see three guys emerge from the forest is a surprise to say the least." I attempted to lighten the mood but I only got half a smile out of him.
"I'm sorry that happened to you." He said quietly. I shrugged in response while looking down.
"We'll fix your car for you and you can be on your way." Disappointment rushed through me. "Or you could stay until you want to go. We're always happy to welcome new people." I perked up at this. This could be the new beginning I was looking for. I tried not to look to excited at his words so I slowly nodded.
"I didn't plan on settling down anywhere but I wouldn't mind experiencing this place." I took a moment to organize my thoughts. "How did all of this," I motioned around me, "come to be?"
"Well. . .a few years back there were a few of us living together in Maine when we came across something we shouldn't have. I assume that you know about vampires?" I nodded.
"My mother used to tell me stories about them." I said.
He nodded as well. "Most mothers do so that our young stay away from them." He took a deep breath. "They were cloaked all in black, just finished burning some of their own kind. That was what attracted us in the first place. I'll never forget the scent." Rashed shivered involuntarily. I was right to edit my story. "The figures called themselves the Volturi."
My breathing stopped.
"They threatened us and killed my sister to prove they were stronger but we fought back and killed some of them as well until we called it a truce. What was left of us felt like we weren't safe. So we hightailed it out of Maine, traveled around to tell people about them, and then settled here. Away from the public eye so we can be ourselves. It's been three years since. We've grown in numbers in the last year or so. Shifters from all around are joining us and other packs like ours for protection from the vampires who want to hurt us. We even have a few witches join. They put up a warning charm." He showed me his necklace. It was a smooth rock with a symbol on the front. "This will vibrate if anything not shifter crosses the protection line."
For someone he just met he sure was telling me everything. What if I had been a spy for the Volturi? I would have just found out his security plan. Unless he feels strongly for this? Fool proof? No such thing.
"Everyone who is a member gets one. The children get on me when they reach the age of sixteen. It's somewhat of a thing here. They feel like they belong and it's important that they take care of the pack." I could understand that.
Suddenly my stomach rumbled. My cheeks turned red in embarrassment.
Rashed laughed. "Hungry? I am too. Come on, let's go see what I can find."
I loved a male that could cook.
