Chapter Six

Edwards POV

I could still hear the clink the key made in the porcelain bowl. It had dawned on me that Bella would age, albeit over a long time due to her being a shifter but would still die in the end. If I stayed with her I would only be prolonging my suffering. It was best to do it now and maybe suffer less than long term. She was alive out there right now and if I don't know when she dies it won't hurt so badly when and if I find out. That's my philosophy anyway.

If I let her go now then she could live a long happy life with someone else. Maybe even with someone of her own kind.

When I told my family my decision everyone, but Rose, objected. Alice was the loudest.

"She's my sister!" Alice screamed at me.

"No, she isn't, Alice. You wanted her to be but I won't be able to give her what she wants. I refuse to change her! And what if the Volturi catch wind of her? Can you imagine Shifters in the guard?" I argued right back. Jasper came up behind her with a snarl on his face. I was too close to his mate.

"Edwards doing the right thing." Rose spoke up behind me. "He's letting her go so she can have a long full life. He doing this to protect everyone."

"Oh shut up Rose! Your just jealous because Bella has a heartbeat and you don't." Alice yelled.

"Excuse me?!" Rose exclaimed.

"She's not-" I cut both of them off.

"I wouldn't be able to give her a family. Sure, she would have us but I know she wants children and I can't give her that."

They went quite.

"So that's it then? Your not even going to talk to her about it? Bella doesn't get a say?" Alice continued.

Alice had a point but so did I. Bella would make me stay and then I would suffer forever after she died, childless, and nothing else to show for her life. I wouldn't let that happen.

"I don't want to move again." Rose said suddenly. I looked into her mind and saw what she had just realized. If I left Bella we would move.

Carlisle interject. "We won't be moving. I just entered into a five year program through the hospital. There're collaborating with the hospitals in Diamond Lake and I can't back out now. It would bring too much attention toward our family."

Alice was overjoyed. In her mind I couldn't break up with her for five years now and by that time we would be married. Since she couldn't see shifters she didn't realize.

"Alice, no. I'm still going to break up with her."

"Damn you, Edward!" She stormed out of the house, Jasper following after her.

"Will you be able to handle seeing her at school?" Emmett asked. He had been curiously quiet. I knew he already thought of Bella as family.

"I'll just stay far away from her." I answered then left the room.

I called Bella then jogged to her house, trying to prolong the moment of crushing her. This was for her own good. Nothing good could come out of a relationship with a vampire.

That clink of the key now kept replaying in my ears. The only thing keeping me going was the thought of seeing her in school when it begins.
